Richard Mandell has practiced the art and science of golf course architecture since 1992. His firm, Richard Mandell Golf Architecture, is located in Pinehurst, North Carolina.Richard’s work has been nationally recognized for his Creekside Golf & Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia with a nomination for Best New Course in both Golf Digest Magazine and Georgia Golf News. His expansion of Seaford Golf & Country Club won the 1996 DuPont North America Safety, Health, and Environmental Excellence Award. Blue Heron Golf Course, a public layout on the eastern shore of Maryland, was named one of the Top Ten Short Courses in America by Driving Range Magazine. He has restored Donald Ross’s last work at Raleigh Country Club and A. W. Tillinghast’s Erie Golf Club, among others. His renovation of Water’s Edge Country Club recently won the Golf Course Industry Builders Excellence Legacy Award for Renovation of the Year 2009 and was runner-up for GolfInc. Magazine’s 2009 Renovation of the Year Award as well.
Richard has written for national and international golf publications such Golf Course Architecture, Links: The Best of Golf, and Golf Illustrated to name a few. He has provided chapters in two books on Golf Architecture entitled Golf Architecture: A Worldwide Perspective (vols. 1 & 2). The chapters are Meaningful Selection and Placement of Hazards and The Evolution of Strategy. Richard also contributed a chapter to Favourite Holes by Design: The Architect’s Choice.
Richard Mandell's seminal work, Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf (The Evolution of a Legend) won the prestigious International Network of Golf Book of the Year Award (2007). His book was a finalist for both Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award and the United States Golf Association's Herbert Warren Wind Book Award as well.
