Book review: Cocks' and Morgan's 'Spoiled'

A joyful, fun-filled read for young adult fans of the Hollywood scene.

Washington, October 23, 2011—The first offering for young adults from the team of Heather Cocks and Jessical Morgan—ex-reality show producers and current fashion bloggers at their own popular web site—brings youthful readers the engaging and fast paced tale of two sisters unexpectedly learning to get along in the glitzy, superficial, ultra-hyped world of contemporary Hollywood.

After her mother’s death, sixteen-year old Molly Dix discovers that she’s actually the daughter of a famous movie star heartthrob Brick Berlin. As a result of her mother’s untimely demise, she’s expected to relocate from her low-key mid-west home to dad’s palatial and transfer to a new high school in ever-so-trendy La-La Land.

Meanwhile her half sister Brook is surprised to learn she has an actual sibling, forcing her to juggle her enthusiasm over Molly’s existence with the fact that she now has to share the benefits of living with a wealthy, single parent superstar dad. As a result, she can’t resist plotting with her friends to ensure her new sister doesn’t upset the existing social order at their Beverly Hills high school.

With the popularity of books and shows such as “Gossip Girl,” this novel for young adults will speak to readers of all ages. Book fans who appreciate the sparky dialogue of romantic comedies and the snarky observations of People Magazine will love this story of two teen-aged sisters who have to learn to coexist in their newly extended family and social circle.

The author’s main message for young readers—live with change and embrace the positive—works well across boundaries such as age, location, and social status.

Enjoy this speedy read or share with your younger friends. Spoiled is a fun way to spend an afternoon. It’s a great beach read, too, although at this time of year you’ll have to head farther south to find those rays!

Cocks’ and Morgan’s Hollywood fashion blog, “Go Fug Yourself,” has made Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List” and boasts millions of monthly readers. Both authors live in Los Angeles where, it’s said, they watch everything on the CW channel.
