In an article for the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT), which is recognized as “the world’s most comprehensive data center on radical Islamic terrorist groups, contributor Abigail Esman reports that the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) confirms that large numbers of Canadians are being radicalized in venues that not only include mosques but dinner parties and family residences as well.
One assessment reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) claims that “with the exception of the United States, there are more terrorist groups active in Canada today than in any other country in the world.”
No less than 25 individuals, nearly all of whom are between the ages of 18 and 35, have been involved in four plots inside Canada in the past seven years. Though the bulk of the activity still remains abroad, the rapidly growing internal radicalization in Canada combined with homegrown plots is a cause for concern. It also indicates that other nearby regions are being influenced such as Midwesterners in the United States living in areas such as
Among the schemes that have been thwarted in Canada were a plot to behead the prime minister, a bombing attack on a passenger train between
As Esman states, not all the terrorist activity is violent. A significant portion has also been financial. In fact, Canada’s history of providing funds for a variety of terrorist activities is considerably longer than its radicalization efforts. Unfortunately, the radicalization process today is extremely active and growing at an alarming rate.
Though the Muslim population in Canada is not as large as the U.S., it is believed that significantly more Canadian Muslim converts have left the country to join radical groups in Syria than their American counterparts.
None of which bodes well for North America because extremist activities are difficult to control and eliminating converts is virtually impossible. As a result, the cancer of Islamism spreads like a contagious disease that infects everything with which it makes contact.
Already Canada has experienced a number of high profile honor killings. A few similar incidents have been reported in the U.S. but, thankfully, they have been far more infrequent by comparison.
Perhaps most alarming is the high percentage of Canadian Muslims who favor instituting Sharia law in Canada. Eighty-eight percent of the Islamic population supports such a move.
Certain areas in Canada, like
Already the International Institute for Counterterrorism has, as Abigail Esman points out, come to the conclusion that it is impossible to stop radicalization. That being the case, the problem will only continue to increase and spread throughout the globe.
If Islamism is impossible to stop, then we must find a way to neutralize it at the very least. It sounds like a reasonable proposition, but success is contingent upon awareness and the extremists are counting on the fact that the world will awaken only after it is too late to solve the problem.
