CHARLOTTE, May 27, 2013 – In a column describing the significance of The Normandy American Cemetery at Omaha Beach in France, I wrote that it is impossible to appreciate the magnitude of that site until you experience it yourself.
Following that article, I received an e-mail link to a video that altered some my thinking.
While I still believe that “being there” is the best possible way to understand the history or culture or aura of a place, sometimes pictures and music can be a powerful substitute.
During World War II, my mother was among the first 100 women in the United States to join the Marines. Until the day she died, nothing made her more proud than her service. She would have been thrilled to see a Marine Corps color guard at her graveside with a woman presenting her the American flag.
Often mere words cannot express the power, the meaning or the debt we owe to our fighting men and women who have given their lives to defend the freedoms we hold so dear.
