The Benghazi hearings were a witch hunt, until now. What changed?

With new revelations by the mainstream press about Benghazi, we must begin to look inward to a growing lack of integrity. Photo: AP

CHARLOTTEMay 10, 2013 – When the congressional hearings on Benghazi convened on Wednesday, it was largely regarded by much of the media as a political witch hunt. Less than 24-hours later, Jonathan Karl of ABC News has revealed that he has obtained the redacted CIA talking points which prove without doubt that the White House and State Department knew the attack in Libya was led by al-Qaeda from the beginning.

Welcome to the party, but Karl’s epiphany is hardly breaking news. Two questions arise. Why did it take so long for the media to discover what average Americans have known for eight months? And, what happened in less than two days to suddenly open the media’s eyes?

Now that the “witch hunt” has become a legitimate effort to get to the truth, and it has become acceptable for mainstream media to question Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, will the dominoes finally begin to fall?

According to Karl, there are 12 different versions of the talking points that show they were extensively edited from the originals issued by the CIA. Karl further reports that White House e-mails directly implicate State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland in the removal of all references to al-Qadea in the talking points.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney stated at a daily press briefing on November 28 of last year that only one word had been altered in the original talking points, a fact that has been proven false. According to Carney the word “consulate” was changed to “diplomatic facility.”

In one e-mail to White House officials and other intelligence agencies, Nuland insisted that references to al-Qaeda needed to be removed because they “could be abused by members (of Congress) to beat up the State Department for not paying attention to warnings, so why would we want to feed that?”

It appears the flood of information that is rapidly threatening to burst through the dam can no longer be contained by sticking a thumb in the dike.

As more hearings with additional whistle-blowers were announced later in the day, Democratic committee members agreed that they are necessary. Sentiments that were largely missing when the hearings began on Wednesday as Democrats used much of their hearing time to make statements defending Hillary Clinton.

By itself, the Benghazi story is troubling that the United States would have so little regard for American diplomats in service to their country. American citizens became expendable so that elites such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton could maintain their high living lifestyles.

Even more disgusting is the pretense by the President and former Secretary of State in assuring the families of the slain foreign service workers, as well as the American people, that the people responsible would be brought to justice. Not a single arrest has been made since the attacks took place on September 11, 2012.

Not to be overlooked in that scenario is the blatant falsehood of blaming the attacks on a YouTube video.

Perhaps the government and its elected officials have always been so deeply immersed in their  personal welfare and narcissistic importance that they have become desensitized to the goals and aspirations of the people they serve. On the other hand, such attitudes appear to be intensifying on a daily basis and moving in that direction to the extreme.

Is this the result of a 24/7 media cycle? Or is it the quest for power, money and notoriety? Why has all semblance of journalistic integrity disappeared and when did it become so visibly polarized?

The founding fathers were not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but they were statesmen and diplomats. They did possess ideals, dreams and ideas that planted the seeds of what became the unmistakable experiment known as the American spirit.

That no longer exists except when communities come together after a terrorist attack and, even then, the spirit of unity that once defined our nation is but a fleeting reminder of what our country once represented to the world.
