Jose Fernandez, Wil Myers named top MLB rookies

LOS ANGELES, November 11, 2013 — Miami Marlin Jose Fernandez won the National League Rookie of the Year award for 2013, while Tampa Bay’s Wil Meyers won the award for the American League.

Jose Fernandez, 21, made 28 starts for Miami while posting 2.19 ERA to go with a 0.979 WHIP and 187 strikeouts. His record of 12-6 is especially good when looking at a Marlins team that lost 100 games.

Fernandez was drafted by the Marlins with the 14th overall pick in 2011. He will not be arbitration eligible until 2016 and is signed through the 2018 season.

Wil Meyers, 22, played in 88 games after making his MLB debut on June 18. Myers pposted a .293/.354/.478 slash line with 13 homeruns and five stolen bases.

Kansas City drafted Myers in the third round of the 2009 amatuer draft. Tampa Bay acquired Myers in a trade last December that sent James Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals in exchange for Myers, Jake Odorizzi, Patrick Leonard, and Mike Montgomery.

Centerfielder Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers finished second in the National League and Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller third. Detroit’s Jose Iglesias finished second in the American League with Myers’ teammate, Chris Archer, getting the third most votes.
