MLB 2013 Preview: Chicago White Sox

LOS ANGELES, March 7, 2013 — Rookie manager Robin Ventura guided the Chicago White Sox to a surprisingly good 85-77 record in 2012. They finished just three games behind the Detroit Tigers for the American League Central pennant, but out of the Wild Card playoff game.

A lot will be riding this year on the health of Jake Peavy and youngster Chris Sale to solidify the top of a rotation that ranked 17th in the majors with a 4.15 ERA. If both stay healthy, they could be one of the better 1-2 punches in baseball.

Chris Sale is coming off his first full season as a starter and Peavy threw over 200 innings last year for the first time since 2007. Staying healthy is easier said than done.

The meat of the White Sox lineup is not getting any younger, but Paul Konerko, Alex Rios and Adam Dunn are each capable of hitting at least 25 homeruns. In 2012, Chicago ranked seventh among MLB teams in runs scored and third in homeruns.

A.J. Pierzynski, who signed with Texas as a free agent, came from out of nowhere to hit 27 of those homeruns in 2012. The numbers Pierzynski put up last year are not likely to be repeated in 2013 by new starting catcher, Tyler Flowers.
