Philadelphia rally to free Adam Kokesh, N.A. Poe

PHILADELPHIA, May 23, 2013 — A rally in support of Adam Kokesh and N.A. Poe was held at the Philadelphia Federal Detention Center during a hearing on bail and their release. The “Adam vs. The Man” rally was set to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, at the James A. Byrne Federal Courthouse at 601 Market Street in Philadelphia.

A 2:30 rally was held to welcome Kokesh and Poe out of jail. Thirty people gathered, but they were informed by Chris Goldstein of PhillyNORML that only Poe would be released. Kokesh remains in the “federal cage” for now, reportedly refusing to cooperate in any way with the authorities.

Kokesh and Poe were arrested by police for exercising their First Amendment rights during a protest in favor of marijuana legalization on May 18, 2013. Organizers hoped for and needed a large number of supporters to come out to the rally. They were requesting that supporters come with signs, flags, megaphones, ponchos, and definitely with the spirit of freedom. They warned, “be prepared to lose your voice as we yell out, ‘FREE ADAM!’” They wanted the crowd to create a hugely noisy scene at the rally, so that the courts understood the people are outraged with the way this matter has unfolded.

Kokesh’s supporters demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Kokesh and Poe from the, “federal cage,” as they call it.

In addition to protesting outside, some people were allowed inside the courthouse for the hearing. Rally organizers hoped to pack the courtroom.

This was a rain or shine event. After the rally, supporters planned to gather at 4:00 for a combined celebration/legal fundraiser at the Triumph Brewery. The 2:30 rally seems to have been added on.

Complete information on what happened to Kokesh is available at  Donations are needed to Adam’s Legal Fund. His supporters are currently seeking the best Philadelphia civil rights attorney available. They have already surpassed their initial goal of raising $5,000. At present, the Kokesh defense team is no longer accepting further FRN/USD donations.

Representatives of the Fund issued this statement:

“This is the one and only official Adam Kokesh legal fund. Adam’s business team, his friends, other activists and his selected public relations agent Shield Mutual are operating this fund because we need funds to hire a lawyer, and Adam obviously cannot access his funds while in prison. Adam Kokesh is currently in the Philadelphia federal prison on absurd and unfounded charges of assaulting a federal officer. We urgently need to retain a lawyer to defend Adam from the government legal system.

“Although the video evidence may exonerate Adam, in the meantime he will need legal assistance negotiating release conditions and possibly a plea bargain. Hiring a top lawyer will enable his defense to progress more effectively. This is the federal court system. Justice is not relevant here. Money, lawyers [and] raw determination count for more.

“Support Adam. But keep in mind that this has more to do with us demonstrating our willingness to support each other than it does with Adam. Today it is Adam; tomorrow it will be someone else, maybe you.”
