ATLANTA, OCTOBER 18, 2013—For many Americans, the government shutdown was the equivalent of a woman giving her ex-boyfriend the silent treatment while he watched football. They shrieked. They closed. We shrugged.
There actually was no full government shutdown. It was an executive branch shutdown. Congress and the judiciary were open for business. President Obama closed his branch of government and gave his employees a paid vacation. He spent his time off giving speeches and golfing, which is what he does when the government is open.
For the rest of us, there was a brief respite from a government that has targeted half the country for committing the sin of disagreeing with Obama. For 16 days, IRS agents had to harass conservatives without guidance from the Eric Holder injustice department. The Environmental Protection Agency saw 93% of their workers deemed non-essential, which the rest of us already knew.
The government reopened on a Thursday. By late Friday, this same government would shut down again for about 64 hours until Monday morning. Despite missing 16 days, government employees apparently had no work to catch up on. Nothing was urgent, so working over the weekend after an entire one day back on the job was too much to ask.
Obama was hard at work preparing his newest round of excuses for future failures. If the economy continues to falter, it will be because of the shutdown. He spent the first day back at work complaining about bloggers and talk radio hosts. He even criticized “professional activists who profit off of conflict.”
For a man who spends much of his life looking in the mirror, he certainly seems to have mastered the self-love without the self-awareness.
Many apolitical Americans are finally beginning to realize what many conservatives have known for some time.
The Obama government is useless on its best days and harmful on most other days.
It wants to run the entire healthcare system, yet it cannot even design a decent website for people to register.
It ignores people hurting due to high gasoline prices while spending billions on failed green energy projects.
It insists on legalizing illegal immigrants while Americans already living here cannot find full-time jobs.
It sits and watches as Iran develops a nuclear bomb, Syria engages in genocide, and Russia and China fill a leadership vacuum that America used to occupy.
It spends part of its time failing, part of its time blaming, and zero percent of its time succeeding at anything.
Liberals can tell the world that Obama is being stifled by other people determine to see him fail. In the real world excuses only satisfy the people giving them.
Now that the government is reopened, let’s ask some hard questions.
Will Americans finally learn the truth about Benghazi, Fast and Furious, IRS abuses, and NSA spying?
Will the words “responsible,” and “accountable” ever result in a single person being fired, or will they remain insincere buzzwords?
Will the Obama administration be good at anything? Will they show an ounce of competence, or will utter failure be cloaked under euphemisms such as “glitches?”
Will they actually try to bring people “together,” or will that remain a phony slogan buried under accusations of racism, sexism and bigotry against anybody pointing out Obama administration shortcomings?
How many days will it take before Obama takes the latest debt ceiling increase and attempts to spend it on a failed mandatory pre-school entitlement program known as “investing in education?”
At what point will a lifelong community organizer with an overinflated sense of self and an overstated intellect with zero results to back it up finally learn an ounce of humility?
The answer to the last question is never. A man who does not know how to do anything because he has never done anything will continue to lecture the rest of us on what we need to do.
Meanwhile, government will remain dysfunctional while the man in charge blames a culture in Washington that he supervises.
Why is the government open again?
