AIKEN, S.C., November 14, 2013 — President Obama has reached new lows in his desperate attempt to salvage the Affordable Care Act. With the website still ineffective and Americans losing trust and confidence in his ability to govern, he has run out of viable options. Even the normally reliable strategy of demonizing opponents will not work this time; Republicans have stepped back and let the law self-destruct as they predicted. Democrats broke the healthcare system. They own it.
Obama’s last desperate option is a patronizing appeal to the same millennials who marched down the streets chanting, “Yes, we can” in 2008. The new Obamacare advertisements directed at them are insulting, demeaning, and downright destructive.
One ad encourages young people to go out binge drinking because they can always get free medical care afterward. Another ad shows a hyper-sexualized young woman bragging that her new “free” birth control will allow her to have as much sex as she wants without consequences.
Sex and alcohol without consequences? The Obama campaign is Woodstock without the endorsement (yet) of illegal drugs.
Team Obama did not factor the long-term medical consequences of alcohol and sex abuse. Drunk driving accidents kill people. Even without factoring in vehicle usage, binge drinking often leads to alcohol poisoning overdoses.
Reckless sex leads to everything from unintended pregnancies to venereal diseases to AIDS.
As president, Obama should be more than a little embarrassed at this ad campaign. He has another role that should make him even more ashamed of it: He is a father.
His daughters Sasha and Malia are 15 and 12. By all accounts they are well-adjusted girls who are on their way to being young women. Does Obama not understand that he is targeting girls and boys as young as they are with these ads?
Early in his presidency, Obama joked that any boy trying to date his daughters would face their father, who would respond with “predator drones.” The line was funny, and an accurate reflection of a father who would do anything to protect his daughters.
Yet in a desperate attempt to salvage his sinking presidency, he is abandoning the one shred of decency that humanized a man who often comes across as robotic and uncaring.
He would never encourage his own daughters to get drunk and be part of the “hookup culture” that is devastating young people today. It is nothing less than outrageous that he would encourage such “standards” of behavior for any other parent’s daughters or sons.
There is nothing cool or funny about binge drinking or casual sex between youths with bodies and emotions still growing. His targeting of these kids is no different than when tobacco companies used the Joe Camel icon to sell cigarettes.
It was liberals who forced the tobacco companies to euthanize Joe Camel. Those same liberals are staying silent now.
These ads promoting Obamacare need to be removed, and they need to be removed now. Then Obamacare itself can eventually be removed along with Obama himself in January of 2017. This will not fix our degraded culture entirely, but it will be a good start.
