Los Angeles law enforcement praise selves after LAX shooting

LOS ANGELES, November 2, 2013 — A shooting at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday morning is an example of the sort of event that used to make Americans recoil in horror. Now, to the detriment of humanity everywhere, far too many people are simply shrugging their shoulders. Murderous rampages are the new normal.

Non-stop global media coverage in the internet age has reduced tragedies to a guessing game of who will react inappropriately and when.

First came the self-praising news conference. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA) Police Chief Gene Marie Lindsey, LAX Police Chief Patrick Gannon, and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck all took turns praising each other for their hard work.

We were told in the press conference that Fire Chief Jim Featherstone was on his first day on the job. FBI Special Agent in Charge David Bowdich was there to let everybody know that he was the Special Agent in Charge. This responsibility includes saying absolutely nothing and making sure nobody else says anything either.

So if nobody is allowed to provide any information, why hold useless press conferences? Even President Obama, who comments on virtually everything, stayed relatively quiet on this issue. Why talk if there is nothing to say?

Public relations trumps everything else. Perception is reality. Officials have to look like they are “doing something.” A lack of effective optics ruined George W. Bush’s presidency after Hurricane Katrina, and officials are not going to just do their jobs without holding press conferences to remind us all how hard at work they are.

We will be told that steps are being taken to make sure something like this “never happens again.” Of course it will happen again, because cosmetics steps are preferred over concrete ones.

While everybody in law enforcement was basking in their own glow, it took several hours to learn the name of the shooter. A 23-year-old man named Paul Ciancia did it. He had anti-government hostility and wanted to kill TSA workers.

The next step is for politicians and media pundits to exploit the tragedy for their own gain. Senators Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein will call for more gun control while pretending not to dismantle the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Joan Walsh at Salon will blame white Republicans and Tea Party attendees everywhere. Chris Matthews will declare the shooting a product of anti-Obama racism connected to Obamacare.

Meanwhile, several people were injured and one TSA agent was murdered. The real story is that nothing will be done to prevent future tragedies. This was not a security breach since the shooter did not go through security.

Those wanting to create even more oppressive conditions at airports will have their say. Yet those clamoring for quarantining mentally ill people will be dismissed as cruel and heartless.

Cycle, rinse, recycle, repeat.

Some people are just crazy. In past decades it was legal to forcibly medicate them and forcibly institutionalize them for observation.

Until and unless these real life-saving measures are reenacted, the approach to minimizing these events will be as useless as the press conferences that follow.
