BRISTOL, TENNESSEE, May 8, 2013—The four Americans murdered by Radical Islamists in Benghazi, Libya, had names. The murdered men were United States Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens, U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, and Navy SEAL Tyrone S. Woods.
President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ambassador Susan Rice all blamed an anti-Muslim video for causing spontaneous attacks on September 11th, 2012 that killed the four brave Americans. The film-maker remains imprisoned despite clear evidence that the attacks were pre-planned terrorist attacks deliberately timed to inflict pain on the eleventh anniversary of 9/11.
The Obama administration stuck to the video narrative long after it was thoroughly discredited. White House talking points were altered to delete any references to Radical Islam.
Two questions have never been answered. Who in the White House or State Department gave the order to push the video narrative? Who demanded the altering of the talking points?
Now it has been discovered that seven Americans survived the Benghazi attack. The White House vigorously denies claims that their right to tell the truth has been suppressed.
Now there are whistle-blowers. These three people also have names. They are Gregory N. Hicks, Deputy chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Libya, Mark I. Thompson, Counterterrorism Bureau Deputy Coordinator for Operations, and Eric Nordstrom, Libyan Regional Security Officer.
These individuals are not partisan gunslingers. They all worked for the State Department, not know for being a hotbed of conservatism.
They are speaking up, and people who speak up make enemies. The question will be how far those enemies go to silence these men.
Right now there is a desperate attempt to get to the truth colliding with people who may have vested interest in that truth never being discovered.
Some people on the right will be acting for partisan advantage, but most of them just want the truth. Some liberals love their country and will put the truth over any one man, just as John Dean put patriotism over the Nixon White House during Watergate.
Yet other liberals are now furiously typing away at their keyboards looking for the slightest shred of data that can be manipulated to fit the narrative of a partisan witch hunt. They will try to create weapons of mass distraction out of thin air.
These are the gutter snipes who declare innocent phrases such as “binders full of women,” to be hate speech. They insist that innocent gestures such as an awkward reach for a water bottle are career-ending offenses.
Watergate ended careers, and nobody died from Watergate.
Right now, the worst of the left in this country are looking for the slightest pressure leak that can be turned into an exploding inferno.
Do they have conservative political biases? Did the whistle-blowers ever vote Republican? Did they ever attend a Tea Party meeting? Do they have any incriminating Facebook or Twitter posts? Have they ever been seen shaking hands or taking a picture with Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann or any other social conservative? Do they listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or any other conservative talk radio programs? Do they watch Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC?
Where do they stand on domestic issues having nothing to do with Benghazi? Do they disagree with Obamacare? Are they against the theory of man-made climate change? What are their views on abortion? What about gay marriage?
Were any of them ever arrested? If so, what were the charges? Have they ever faced allegations of domestic violence? Have they ever been accused of racism? Have they ever been fired from a job or received a poor performance review?
For those who think this is silly or far-fetched, Mitt Romney was (falsely) accused in 2012 of bullying a classmate four decades earlier who Romney may or may not have known was gay.
This is what opposition researchers do. For liberals, anybody who could inflict political harm on the current liberal President or the presumptive 2016 Democratic nominee is considered opposition.
There are people who have a vested interested in seeing President Obama fail. Yet that does not invalidate the Benghazi hearings or the whistle-blowers. The motives of Republicans one way or the other does not alter the seriousness of the charges.
If the end result of Benghazi is the complete exoneration of the entire Obama administration, then so be it.
If not, then honest standards must be set. President Obama and Hillary Clinton do not automatically have their version of events accepted at face value simply because they say so. The whistle-blowers are not automatically discredited for offering a version that potentially damages them. The reverse is true as well. Everybody has a right to be heard, with the truth being the final arbiter.
This is not about whether or not President Obama gets to finish his second term.
This is not about whether Hillary Clinton gets to succeed him.
This is not about whether Republicans will make gains in 2014.
This is about four dead Americans, and why they died.
Hillary Clinton asked “What difference, at this point, does it make?”
It makes all the difference in the world.
President Obama has been accused of going to sleep early and being completely detached while American diplomats were being murdered. This charge needs to be answered as either true or false. There is no middle ground.
The sharpest accusation is that the Obama administration played politics with American lives, letting people die rather than revise their own discredited belief that Radical Islam is not the problem.
This accusation, one way or the other, must be answered.
The whistle-blowers will have their say.
But they need to watch their backs. Tattle-tales do not do well on the school playground. They fare even worse in the world of power, politics and win-at-all costs government officials.
