The hardest Benghazi question for liberals

BRISTOL, TENNESSEE, May 8, 2013—The Benghazi hearings are the tip of the iceberg. The real gut-wrenching moment for many comes long after the last hearing has concluded. Liberals in particular will have to ask themselves the most painful question they have ever had to ponder.

Four men were murdered on September 11th, 2012, in Benghazi, Libya. They were United States Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens,  U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, and Navy SEAL Tyrone S. Woods.

After several months, Americans finally may get an explanation as to exactly what happened that night and in the following days. Three whistle-blowers have come forward. They are Gregory N. Hicks, Deputy chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Libya, Mark I. Thompson, Counterterrorism Bureau Deputy Coordinator for Operations, and Eric Nordstrom, Libyan Regional Security Officer.

Many liberals have denounced the entire Benghazi investigation as a partisan witch hunt led by Republicans who want to destroy the Obama administration at all costs.

A counter-charge is that these very same liberals are circling the wagons and doing everything under the sun to protect the Obama administration no matter what.

While President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have not been charged with any crimes, the accusations swirling against them are very serious. They are both accused of pushing a false narrative about an anti-Muslim video rather than admit that Radical Islamist engaged in a pre-planned attack on the eleventh anniversary of 9/11. They are also accused of ordering that talking points specifically addressing Radical Islam were altered.

The entire Obama approach to foreign policy rests on his narrative being upheld. This does not make him or any of his cabinet guilty. It does provide them with a motive to lie.

Even worse, they are accused of being totally indifferent to human life. Clinton’s comment asking “What difference, at this point, does it make?” made her come across as callous. Obama is accused of going to sleep early while others died. This, if true, would be the height of coldness.

Liberals are in a tough position. Barack Obama is more than just the President. For many liberals, he is a demi-god. He is the epitome of their hopes and dreams. He is a committed leftist who is also the first partially black American President. He is the greatest symbol of  hope that the left has ever had. Their world view is tied to his success. His defeating could drag down liberalism for a generation.

Hillary Clinton desperately wants to be the first female President, and her supporters are hell-bent on making it happen. The first woman was nudged aside by the first black, and it is now “her turn” and “their turn.” If she gets derailed again, it will be a crushing blow for liberal women.

Benghazi should be about four dead Americans, but everything in Washington is political. For this reason, liberals need to ask themselves the toughest question they have ever had to face. They need to look in the mirror, and look into the eyes of the person staring back from the glass. They need to ask the ultimate political question.

Do they love their country more than their ideology?

Do they swear allegiance to the American flag, or bow down before Obama and Hillary now and forever?

This question is absolutely fair to ask. Conservatives have been told that they care more about destroying Obama than anything else. Speaking for myself, this is false. If the truth exonerates Democrats, so be it.

Now back to the liberals. They need to remember that Republican John Dean put his country above his party and President Nixon. He did the right thing simply because honor and integrity trumped partisanship. Dean was praised because the liberal media praises conservatives who take down other conservatives. Republicans who eat their own today are the darlings of the liberal media (until and unless they attack Democrats).

The liberal media has done everything to bury this story. Nobody died at Watergate, and the media certainly obsessed over non-scandals during the Bush administration that were downright silly and trivial compared to Benghazi.

Benghazi may turn out to be the worst political scandal in the history of this country. There are dead bodies, and nobody in the Obama administration seems to want to tell the American people exactly what went wrong.

Conservatives who love America must be willing to accept the truth even if it exonerates the Obama administration. That line of reasoning on the right has been accepted.

Liberals who love America must be willing to accept the truth even if it causes President Obama and Hillary Clinton to see their political careers destroyed.

If Obama administration officials go to jail, so be it. It is better to have guilty people in jail than an innocent film-maker who is a political pawn.

If Obama administration officials walk free, it should be because they are innocent, not because they had enough power to suppress their guilt.

Are there any liberal John Dean’s out there? Will liberals put the entire national interest and the families of the murdered victims above the leftist ideology they deeply believe in?

Can they still believe in their liberal message for the future while accepting that maybe their current messengers are deeply flawed and possibly past the line of illegality?

The truth has to come out. It starts with liberals asking the hard question, admitting the truth to themselves, and then admitting it publicly.
