Obama's IRS targets conservatives

WASHINGTON, DC, May 13, 2013—The Internal Revenue Service, after nearly two years of denials, has apologized to conservative groups for targeting them.

Not good enough. Not by a long shot.

This is a cycle that keeps repeating itself, so predicting the outcome is easy.

Liberals will accuse conservatives of being paranoid conspiracy theorists, despite the fact that the IRS admitted to doing the behavior it was accused of doing. Groups with “Tea Party” or “Patriots” in their names were targeted for extensive intrusive questioning that went beyond normal IRS procedures.

The IRS approach was taken straight out of a White House or State Department playbook. Issue repeated denials, delay as long as possible, eventually blame low level bureaucratic bungling after getting caught, and then declare the story old news.

Liberals will insist this has nothing to do with President Obama or any senior administration officials. They cannot know this, rendering this the first of many possible lies.

When conservatives try to investigate why they were targeted, they will face “partisan witch hunt” accusations.

As expected, at a press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Obama feigned outrage and insisted that people be held “responsible” and “accountable.” This means punishment for nobody and free passes for everybody.

Low level workers in Cincinnati are being blamed. They will likely be publicly criticized and “fired,” which means quiet reassignment to another department with full back pay.

This is far from nothing.

The IRS is a powerful part of the federal bureaucracy. President Obama runs the bureaucracy. His employees behaved badly. Every employee who targeted even one conservative entity needs to be brought up on whatever specific federal charges apply. Anybody who gave the orders must also be arrested and tried. That separates accountability from lip service.

Those insisting the targeting of conservatives is non-partisan need to answer a question. Why do these issues always seem to happen when Democrats rule the White House?

Bill Clinton’s IRS had everybody from Paula Jones to the National Rifle Association audited. Paula Jones made $35,000 per year, rendering her an unusual target. When a Clinton lackey was caught digging up hundreds of FBI files on Republicans, Clinton dismissed it as a “bureaucratic snafu.” George W. Bush faced baseless partisan accusations, but with his predecessor and successor, the bad behavior actually happened. With Obama, IRS abuses returned.

Liberals can bring up Richard Nixon, but Nixon resigned to avoid facing impeachment for his abuses.

Forget typical liberal weapons of mass distraction. This IRS scandal happened on Obama’s watch. His employees crossed the line. Anything less than a full investigation and housecleaning of the rotten apples is insufficient.

As of now there is no concrete proof that Obama directly gave orders to have the IRS abuse their powers. Yet for every conservative blaming Obama for everything, there are liberals refusing to hold him responsible for anything.

Innocent people had their lives disrupted for legally participating in the American political process. Their sin was disagreeing with Obama. The Tea Party was born of opposition to unrestrained government spending personified by the Affordable Care Act. The same IRS responsible for targeting conservatives is the entity entrusted with enforcing Obamacare’s mandates. This makes head of Health and Human Services and key Obamacare enforcer Czarina Kathlee Sebelius a “person of interest” to be questioned.

Far from “nothing,” this was a coverup in every sense of the word. Saying “sorry” after getting caught is as hollow as the excuse that low level bureaucrat Keystone Cops acted independently. Low level bureaucrats earn their name by following orders.

Obama’s White House has a reputation for bullying opponents, and the IRS actions personify bullying and abuse of power. The goal was to silence political opponents, another reason conservatives should shout even louder in the streets and from rooftops.

Holding people accountable is not what the Obama administration tends to do. An independent counsel not beholden to the White House is the only way to get to the truth. Internal investigations lead nowhere with a White House known for squelching those not willing to play ball.

Obama may turn out to be completely innocent in this scandal, but his running the bureaucracy gives him a conflict of interest in terms of getting to the bottom of the matter. For the sake of honesty in government, an independent individual must root out every last IRS corruptocrat.

The IRS may not like having their business investigated, but too bad. Neither did conservatives, who had their right to privacy that liberals cherish so much stomped on.
