LOS ANGELES, July 6, 2013 — While Americans were enjoying a quiet July 4th weekend, Nigerian children were being slaughtered by radical Islamists.
Twenty-nine children and an English teacher died when the school they were attending became a gasoline-fueled raging inferno.
This was not an act of random violence. It was barbarism committed by savages belonging to the bloodthirsty ideology that worships such barbarism: This was radical Islam doing what radical Islam does. World reactions range from indifference to excuses.
The children provoked the Islamists by choosing to get an education at a non-Islamic institution. The group accused of committing the violence is al Qaeda affiliate Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege.” These children will never have a chance to grow up to become infidels, heretics, and apostates.
As horrific as this attack is, an even more horrendous occurrence would be a lack of a global reaction.
President Obama frequently waxes poetic about “the children,” and how America should “invest in education.” Yet the man who has opinions on everything from climate change to nuclear disarmament tends to fall silent whenever radical Islamists commit another atrocity. He spoke up loudly to support the overthrow of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, but stays silent as Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi is ousted.
If ever there were an event to prompt an American leader to say something, anything, the slightest thing, it would be the senseless slaughter of innocent children.
Will the Congressional Black Caucus say something? Will Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and other race warriors who mention Selma, Alabama in every third sentence speak up this time?
This is about ideology, pure and simple. Leftists are in a bind because they have made excuses for the behavior of Islamists for four decades. Whenever Islamists commit an atrocity, Americans are lectured about diversity, tolerance, and multiculturalism. We are cautioned not to blame one billion Muslims, despite zero evidence that we do.
Yet it is one thing when Jews in Israel or Coptic Christians in Egypt are being murdered. Many on the left have little use for them. Now black children are being set on fire. The left obsesses over issues of race and youth. The heart of the Obama coalition are blacks and young people.
The rubber has just met the road. If the left will not condemn this act and follow it up with meaningful action, then the left will never ever stand up for anything decent in this world.
Nigeria and Egypt share more than a continent. They are both on the front lines in the struggle against radical Islam. Egypt is using its military to crush the Islamists. While the American media laments the peaceful Egyptian demonstrations turning violent, they neglect to mention that it is Islamists causing the violence. The military cracking down is a positive development, because the only thing radical Islamists understand is force. All the Islamic rage in the world can be reduced when those shaking clenched fists are met with tanks carrying superior munitions.
If America’s role in the world is to mean anything, it should guarantee that the Nigerian people have everything they need to crush radical Islam in their nation.
The fire that killed thirty innocent schoolchildren was not caused by global warming. It was caused by radical Islamists who slaughter innocents as just another tool of politics. So the next time Obama says “we can’t wait,” or “the time to act is now,” he will hopefully be speaking about removing every murderous Islamist zealot from the planet.
Obama and other Western leaders are not to blame for this act of genocide. They are to blame if they fail to do anything to stop future Islamist terrorist acts.
If the last five years are any guide, the world will continue to burn.
