LOS ANGELES, July 4, 2013 —America has a new seven-time sports champion, and his medals will not be tarnished or taken away.
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut devoured the competition in the 2013 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, along with 69 hot dogs, breaking his own world record by one hot dog.
A crowd of 40,000 people came to Coney Island in Brooklyn New York to watch the Super Bowl of competitive eating.
Chestnut is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the eating world. It was pointed out a couple of years ago that he has not had to face competitive eating superstar Takeru Kobayashi since 2009 due to the latter’s contract dispute with Major League Eating, the international federation that runs the Nathan’s contest. Kobayashi was the six time champion from 2001 through 2006, but Chestnut beat him cleanly in 2007 through 2009 before Kobayashi bowed out. Chestnut has won it every year since.
This year Kobayashi sat out again, and a strong newcomer named Matt Stone initially proved worthy competition. Yet at around the 47 hot dog mark, Stone tired and Chestnut pulled away for an easy win. By the end, Chestnut was competing not against the other eaters, but with history.
In the final seconds, he consumed his last hot dog, and the world record was set.
Chestnut has said that his goal was to one day consume 70 hot dogs in the allotted ten minutes, at which point he would retire.
Joey Chestnut is clean and 100 percent American. He ate his way into the record books on live television in front of the world and his screaming fans in Brooklyn.
On this Independence Day, 2013, a legend was born. We saw it. Then new reality is 69, and next year the entire sports world will be rooting for 70.
Joey Chestnut is now more than the number-one-ranked competitive eater in the number-one-nation in the world; he’s the greatest the world has ever seen.America is all about exceptionalism and excellence. On this day, Joey Chestnut became a champion for the ages.
Best of all for his fellow Americans, he became one in Coney Island, the heart of Brooklyn and not too far from the admiring eyes of Lady Liberty herself.
