MANHATTAN, July 30, 2013 — Short of sending General David Petraeus in to level the place like Fallujah and start over, Detroit is beyond hope. Not one dollar of tax money should be spent on Detroit.
Let the Chinese take it over, sell it on Ebay, or just donate it to Canada and write it off as a tax deduction. “Buy American” should not be an excuse to support mediocrity, although mediocrity might be too generous a term for this failed social experiment that was once a proud city.
Retired General Colin Powell warned President George W. Bush about invading Iraq, saying, “If you break it, you own it.”
Liberals have controlled Detroit lock, stock and barrel for the last half a century. They broke it. They own it.
Retired leftist New York Times columnist Bob Herbert opined during the worst of the financial crisis that “It’s easy to demonize the American auto industry. It has behaved with the foresight of a crack addict for years. But even when people set their own houses on fire, we still dial 9-1-1, hoping to save lives, salvage what we can and protect the rest of the neighborhood.”
True, but we do not rebuild their houses for free or pay their medical bills and rehab expenses. The rest of the neighborhood consists of 49 states not as pathetic as Michigan (although liberal cousins California and New York are the most likely candidates for future financial misery).
Herbert argued for government intervention, but the Detroit government is the problem.
Former Mayor Coleman Young represented a new generation of black leaders wanting a more confrontational governing approach. Due to the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow, blacks had a difficult choice to make after the civil rights struggles. The choice was between justice, which Dr. Martin Luther King wanted, and vengeance.
Mayor Young chose vengeance, and Caucasians fled Detroit. With few whites left to blame, the next target became middle class blacks accused of “acting white,” also known as being successful achievers. Now comes the reckoning.
Confiscatory tax policies fail when no wealth is left to confiscate. Excessive regulations break down when there is nobody left to regulate but the lawless.
Detroit should burn like Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns. In the same way smarter and better managed companies gobbled up these firms, private individuals should take the dead charred remains of the Detroit relic and recreate them lean and mean without government help. The incentive would be profit.
Propping up a failed city government is like trying to prop up a stock market with a disastrous bailout package, which coincidentally is what our government did in 2008 and 2009. As expected, the market crashed anyway, with General Motors leading the race to the bottom. Now President Obama is desperately looking for a creative accounting trick to give Detroit a bailout without calling it one.
If Detroit was a corporation, shareholders would have fired the entire board. If the shareholders of Detroit choose to keep the same board of misdirectors, they deserve to have their investment value crash. Nobody should invest one penny in Detroit until every last incompetent and corrupt bureaucrat is replaced.
Coleman Young allowed crime, drugs, and union thugs to destroy Motown. Then imprisoned felon Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick continued the cycle of corrupt liberal mismanagement. The newest poster child for failed government is City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, who wants Obama to be like Young and “bring home the bacon” because “…that’s what you do.”
Only a city held hostage to union bullies and other corrupt officials could keep reelecting these failed executives. After all, why hire a conservative Republican when a perfectly incompetent corrupt liberal Democrat is available? Why impose workable solutions when one can play the race card and blame all conservative Republicans? Black and white liberals wrecked the state, proving that the failure is ideological, not racial.
Detroit would rather allow failed liberals to destroy a once proud city rather than even attempt conservative solutions. Heaven forbid Detroit emulate Manhattan, which was revitalized when conservative Rudy Giuliani turned around the mess his liberal predecessor left him.
Detroit is a place of high taxes, high regulations, and negative results. Other cities in America, particularly in red states, are succeeding. Low taxes and business friendly climates work.
When an illness breaks out, the infected people get quarantined so the entire world does not get infected. Let Detroit burn, and let the rest of the nation go about our business. When the value of Detroit finally reaches absolute zero, an enterprising American can build it again at a profit. Or, the city can just shut down permanently.
Remove the tumor of this city and save the rest of the patient that is this country.
When conservatives offered the slogan “America” Love it or leave it,” it was liberals who responded with “Change it or lose it.” Well the liberals failed Detroit, and now they need to change it or lose it. Fifty years is long past enough time to admit that a failed governing approach requires a machete and not a scalpel.
Detroit deserves nothing, and even less than that for expecting the rest of America to clean up their failures while keeping the sources of those failures in power perpetually.
