GOLUB: Why Obama compared Ho Chi Minh to Thomas Jefferson (Video)

MANHATTAN, July 29, 2013—Last Thursday, President Obama created another stir during a joint meeting with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang. Relations between the former warring nations were normalized during the Clinton administration after then President Bill Clinton received key support from Arizona Senator and former Vietnamese prisoner of war John McCain.

Yet there is a difference between normalization of trade relations and fictional romanticizing of brutal reality. Obama made the absolutely ludicrous assertion that “Ho Chi Minh was actually inspired by the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and the words of Thomas Jefferson.”

This claim is absurd. Ho Chi Minh was a murderer. He killed over 50,000 people during his reign. Minh offered sops to Jeffersonian democracy in a failed attempt to court American leaders during the 1940s.

The only people who fell for Ho Chi Minh’s insincere rhetoric were the 1960s anti-war protesters who bragged about questioning everything while accepting leftist drivel blindly and without question.

One can almost forgive young college students for not knowing anything. Yet how does one explain Obama repeating such nonsense? Why would he do this?

There are three explanations for why Obama says and does what he says and does, and these explanations fit most situations that involve him.

The first explanation for his comments cast him in a very dark light. His fiercest critics are convinced that he is an anti-American subversive. He is a Communist who hates America.

Evidence to support this theory range from his bringing admitted Communist Van Jones into the White House and his tactics straight out of the Alinsky, Cloward and Piven playbook. Every time he engages in an action such as agreeing to unilaterally reduce American nuclear capabilities compared to Russia, his critics see this as proof of his anti-Capitalist beliefs.

His anti-capitalist, anti-growth policies provide further fuel.

The second explanation is a simpler one that also casts an unflattering picture, although one less sinister. Maybe Obama is simply not that bright. At the very least, he does not seem to be as intelligent as his supporters think he is, and certainly not as intellectually exceptional as he fancies himself.

Obama has a habit of making comments that come across as quite stupid and uninformed. He has ended up with egg on his face speaking incorrectly about everybody from President Rutherford B. Hayes to the mullahs in Iran. Sometimes he just gets quotes wrong or makes them up.

Other times he completely misjudges people’s character and intentions. Either way, this does not reflect well on somebody who considers himself an academic.

The third explanation is quite favorable to Obama. These mistakes are actually brilliant political strategy from a man who is crazy like a fox. By creating a benign kerfuffle that harms nobody, it distracts the news media from covering real problems like the stagnant economy, the rise of global Islamism, and scandals ranging from Benghazi to IRS abuses.

Obama successfully ran out the clock and got reelected by making sure that Benghazi was buried underneath a pile of inconsequential news stories. Now that Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman have run their courses, Obama needs more weapons of mass distraction to keep the lapdog media occupied. This Vietnam blunder was a 24 hour toy for media puppies to chew on.

The problem with the Obama as Communist narrative is that it is just too much for most people to swallow. Conspiracy theorists are not always wrong, but they often are. Obama may have other people pulling his strings who are Communists and America-haters, but it strains credulity to think that he personally has some master plan on the level of Stalin or Pol Pot.

As for being clever, this also does not apply here. It would make more sense for him to have bumbling Vice President Joe Biden tossed onto the grenade for a day or so. Obama will throw many people under the bus, but not himself. The criticism of getting something wrong is more than he can bear. He is thin-skinned, and most likely would not make an assertion that was easily disproved if there was nothing political to gain from even trying.

Obama as an uninformed, intellectual lightweight makes the most sense. This does not make him a moron, per se. He is just a doctrinaire leftist who does not question his assumptions. He deeply believes in his leftism, and has never shown an inkling to question the validity of his own views. Most people become more well-rounded intellectually by deliberately trying to challenge and defeat their own assumptions.

Obama accepts the teachings handed down to him as gospel and expresses them with certitude. He often refers to a discussion or topic as “settled,” simply because he believes it or speaks about it.

Obama is not a Communist, but he is a devout leftist. He cannot fathom the idea that some leftists were actually evil. He can reconcile right-wing leaders as evil because he starts out believing that. For left-wing leaders, he has to make excuses so he can bend the truth to his narrative.

This is not out of some scheming or plotting, but the necessity of conforming all data to his pre-determined conclusions.

Ho Chi Minh was a Communist and a leftist. Obama is a leftist. To declare Ho Chi Minh anything other than a Jeffersonian Democrat would require Obama to question and perhaps separate his ideals from the inevitable destructive results. This is beyond his capabilities, so the only thing for him to do is just create his own fiction where leftism is goodness simply because it is leftism.
