HUNTSVILLE, Ala., July 18, 2013 — According to his airbrushed biography, “Lawrence D. Bobo is the W. E. B. Du Bois Professor of the Social Sciences and Chair of the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University.”
He is one of many blacks in prominent societal positions who believes that the acquittal of George Zimmerman proves America is racist to its core.
The entire case can be summed up succinctly: Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin had a street fight. Two men scuffled and one died. This takes place every day without notice. Since Zimmerman and Trayvon were of differing races, the media and black leaders highlighted this one fight to bolster their ratings and relevance, respectively.
While passions ran high on both sides, some Americans simply shrugged. This case was not news, nor was it symbolic of anything. It was a blip in history bracketed between other non-stories from Jody Arias to the birth of another British royal. Every day people are born while others die. These events are significant, but not newsworthy.
Yet while Bobo may not matter, his point of view does. Bobo would love to convince Americans that his view represents mainstream black thought, but it would be insulting to thoughtful blacks to declare him a typical black. Bobo is a typical leftist academic, the second coming of Professor Henry Louis Gates.
Bobo’s assertion about America being a racist nation is more than destructive. It is imbecilic. Look at the evidence.
Only in America could a man get a cushy six-figure job complaining about how unfair life can be. While other Americans have to work in steel mills and other jobs that actually produce things, he sits in a comfortable, air-conditioned office waxing angrily about injustice. Humanities professors dislike being told that what they do is not real work, but at some point the mere mortals in our society have a right to question the necessity of Harvard plutocrats.
If Bob wants to know what is killing black America, he should look in the mirror.
People getting degrees in ethnic studies should prepare for a life of hardship. In the real world, employers want people who know how to actually do things. They want to hire people with useful skills. A degree in ethnic, gender or other liberal arts studies is simply far less valuable to employers than a degree in computer science, engineering or business. People with ethnic studies degrees may be qualified to teach other people who want ethnic studies degrees, but how many of those jobs are actually available? For every Bobo, there are others who have to wait for an available opening that will never come. Employers desperately need medical and legal personnel. Ethnic studies experts are a luxury. The world survived for a long time just fine without them.
Blacks who get real degrees in areas that actually benefit overall society have a vastly enhanced chance of success in a nation that remains a meritocracy. Dr. Benjamin Carson is one of the most renowned surgeons in America. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reached the pinnacle of the legal profession. Two of the brightest economists in America are Dr. Thomas Sowell and Dr. Walter Williams.
These men did more than just pursue excellence. They translated it down to hundreds of other successful professionals of all races. Sowell and Williams inspired future brilliant Wall Street Journal minds including Jason Riley. Any student who learned medicine from Carson is better off for it. Thomas’s law clerks have achieved success, the most notable being radio host Laura Ingraham.
High achievers teach others how to reach for the stars. Grievance mongers teach others how to spend their lives complaining about how unfair life can be. Even if Bobo were right, which he is not, how does creating a new generation of victims solve a single societal problem?
Bobo should kiss Lady Liberty’s feet every night. America has given him far more than most people receive and far more than a man of his light credentials deserves. He should thank his lucky stars that Harvard long ago sacrificed academic excellence for a politically correct curriculum.
Racism exists. There are American racists, and they’ve caused real harm to other Americans. But most Americans despise racism; they categorically reject the notion that America is a fundamentally racist nation. America elected Barack Obama twice.
If Bobo is so convinced of America’s racism, he should keep in mind that the borders are only closed for those trying to enter. He is free to leave any time he likes. He can move to Canada or nowhere, whichever comes first. Better yet, he should move to Saudi Arabia and see how they like his complaining. His teaching career would not last long.
America’s bigots are ideological, not racial. Conservatism teaches people to make the most of their own lives. Leftism teaches that the system must be destroyed and replaced with another system that has failed everywhere. Bobo is a leftist academic. The last thing he, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton need is racial harmony, since their careers are based on spreading racial rage and pitting races against each other. They get rich, while society is poorer for it. Perhaps if they had pursued a trade in college followed by meaningful employment, they would have been better off.
The rest of America certainly would be.
