LOS ANGELES, January 24, 2013 — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stunned decent people everywhere with her angry, defiant testimony before congressional committees investigating the Benghazi murders of four Americans. She wanted to ensure such atrocities never reoccur, but was uninterested in motives (Hint: it was Radical Islam). In a rare moment of accidental candor, she exclaimed “What difference at this point does it make?”
Her cavalier attitude belies a bigger problem. Hillary is more than a person or symbol. She is touted aggressively by her supporters for 2016. She is perfectly qualified to be the Democratic nominee. This is why she matters, and honest people everywhere should fear this. Hillary is inherently corrupt, and sadly so is the entire Democratic Party. To understand why, rewind a quarter of a century.
In 1988, Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis captured the Democratic nomination. A decent, honest man, he wore his liberalism proudly. He was crushed by another man Republicans deemed “good enough.” The loss stung liberals, but they learned the wrong lesson: Honesty was a liability. Never again would integrity trump winning. “Win at all costs” meant lying to Americans about the Democratic candidate’s core.
Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton had it easy because he had no integrity at all. Clinton and Dick Morris raised triangulation to a high art: “Slick Willie” was for whatever 60 percent of Americans were for. He was the most corrupt President in American history. Supporters laughed off “Slick Willie” with “That’s just Arkansas politics.” He covered the dishonesty spectrum from financial to personal to sexual misdeeds.
Tennessee Senator Al Gore Jr. was the son of an honest man who stuck to his liberal beliefs and lost his political career over it. Gore II learned the same wrong lesson, that it is better to make amends after getting elected than to lose honorably. His transgressions ranged from “whoppers” to hiding his beliefs. In 2000 he lost his home state of Tennessee. He eventually ended up doing business with Al Jazeera.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry made his Vietnam service the centerpiece of his campaign, allowing attacks on President George W. Bush’s National Guard service. Kerry then had the temerity to take umbrage when people questioned his own service narrative. He claimed Christmas in Cambodia was “seared” into his memory despite his never having been there. He lashed out at the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, turning their accusations into a pejorative verb. His problem was that the Swift Boat Veterans told the truth, and the top ones were Democrats.
In all of these cases, those knowing the candidates best were underwhelmed with their brazen lack of ethics.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama came out of the Chicago Democratic machine. He was either the only Chicagoan above the fray, or he bathed in it with them all. His numerous scandals in office have been hidden due to personal likability and a fawning media. He is less casually corrupt than Bill Clinton, for whom corruption was a talent that came as naturally as breathing, but when it comes to cold calculation, he takes a back seat to no one.
Hillary Clinton is the worst of all possible worlds. Many scandals involving her husband actually focused on her. After he left office, she racked up new scandals that continue today. On domestic and foreign policy, she has lied to Americans repeatedly while using buzzwords like “accountability” and “responsibility.”
This rogue’s gallery doesn’t include other progressive darlings, like North Carolina’s John Edwards and liberal icon Christopher Dodd. Bill Clinton made his corruption seem charming with a nod and a wink. Edwards was as charming as a trial attorney channeling deceased children for personal gain.
Republicans in recent years have not had these problems at the top. Republicans face constant harsh scrutiny by a hostile media, so they are on guard constantly. Additionally, most Republican presidential candidates leave the race if they cross ethical lines. Texas Governor George W. Bush was so honest that liberals had to invent ethics issues because he refused to be corrupt. Bush-haters knew exactly where he stood and what he believed.
Hillary will do what Obama is failing to do and what every top Democrat has failed to do since Dukakis lost. Hillary will lie, performing a football maneuver that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour called “fake right, run left.”
This can succeed in a campaign, but not as a model of governance. Once Americans realize they have been bamboozled, they react unkindly.
This is the conundrum of campaigning as a moderate while governing as a leftist in a center-right country. Conservatives can advance conservatism by running as conservatives because Americans accept basic tenets of the philosophy.
Hillary could run as a true liberal. Victory would make her heroic. Criticism about liberals getting elected honestly would evaporate. Yet honesty is not her nature. Winning is what matters. Hillary is a true modern Democrat. Integrity? As Hillary would say, what difference at this point does it make?
