LOS ANGELES, February 18, 2013 — This past weekend President Obama played golf with Tiger Woods. White House reporter Ed Henry expressed frustration at the lack of access and transparency about the weekend.
This is one of those rarest of occasions where President Obama is right and his critics are wrong.
MSNBC would love to write a story about two biracial individuals at the top of their professions playing a game once reserved for white men. The words “unprecedented” and “historic” would be thrown in to describe this “momentous” occasion.
The real story is that two of the most incredibly boring individuals on Earth spent the day playing the most boring game on Earth.
Long before Barack Obama received special treatment, Tiger Woods was hailed as a savior of all things in sports. When his sex scandal happened, the real shock was that he or any other golfer of his caliber had sex at all with anybody. Has anybody ever heard Tiger Woods give a press conference? He is incredibly boring. He speaks in a monotone voice about a game that nobody outside of it could possibly get excited about. With the exceptions of “Caddyshack” and “Happy Gilmore,” there has never been nor will there ever be any reason to ever hold a press conference about anything involving golf.
(Those who watch golf have actually been euthanized, and nobody told them.)
Is the media that bored with Benghazi and the genocide in Syria? Do they no longer care about the teetering economy? Does the media really need to cover two individuals who do not matter engaging in a legal activity that does not matter?
To be fair to Mr. Woods, he actually earned his success. Golf is his work. Yet somewhere there is a guy manufacturing widgets in a factory. That work is also legal, honorable, and not terribly exciting. Watching Obama golf is about as exciting as watching Obama visit factories. In both cases he is pretending, engaging in play time with other people who actually work.
Does the media expect Obama to answer questions about Benghazi on the golf course? All he would do is look at the reporters shouting questions and blather about “forward,” “fairness,” and “fair share” while he and Woods play on an exclusive golf course.
The better approach would be a media boycott of Obama. Just refuse to cover him. Nothing he says or does matters. Let’s just get him out of our lives. Stop covering all of his speeches until he proves he actually has something to say. If he refuses to face the media, let the media turn the tables and just ignore him. The only thing less relevant to society than Barack Obama is Barack Obama playing golf.
Let the man golf. Even his worst day on the golf course is better than his best day of governing.
Otherwise, the next step is to have the media spend all day talking about how Barack Obama would cover a television test pattern.
