Anthony Weiner, Barack Obama, and Batman: Trouble in Gotham City

LOS ANGELES, July 20, 2012 — One year after resigning in disgrace, Anthony Weiner is attempting to become the second coming of Barack Obama. This is not good on any level.

Lest any member of the perpetually outraged class attack their keyboards in rage, let’s remember the obvious.

Congressman Weiner was caught engaging in cybersex and phonesex with multiple women. He sent a picture of his lower appendage through Twitter. The married Weiner became a laughingstock as the only married man to suffer the blowback of a sex scandal without even receiving the actual benefit of real sex.

President Obama by all accounts is a devoted family man who loves his wife and daughters.

Yet Obama and Weiner have some traits in common. One less than admirable character trait is their reflexive attack dog nature. They demonize people who disagree with them. They prefer bullying to civil discourse.

Being a bully is problematic, but plenty of successful people ran productive organizations despite being less than pleasant to work with. The real problem with Anthony Weiner’s comeback is what plagues the Obama presidency. Weiner’s attempt to become Mayor of New York City should fall flat for the right reasons.

This is not about personal conduct, or even character. This is about ability.  America used to be a meritocracy, and somewhere along the line qualifications stopped mattering.

The three question test for any job applicant still applies.

1.) Do you know anything?
2.) Do you know how to do anything?
3.) Have you ever done anything?

With regards to both of these men, the first question can be debated but the answers to the second and third questions are a resounding “no.”

Anthony Weiner has been a house-spouse for the last year. This is honorable. Like most men, he wants to go back to work. He has had difficulty finding work. This is not due to his lack of moral fiber. His problem is his lack of actual experience in the work force.

He entered politics straight out of college and latched on to (now New York Senator) Chuck Schumer. As Schumer rose higher, he took Weiner with him. Weiner does not have any private sector experience. He is not a doctor, lawyer, welder, plumber, butcher, baker, or candlestick maker. He is a lifelong bureaucrat without a bureaucracy to mismanage.

President Obama has shown how well this works out in the real world. Like the shopping mall employee who gets moved from lingerie to electrical, President Obama is a case study of a man out of his element and depth.

Obama charmed his way into the top executive position in the country despite a resume consisting of community organizing and unverified academic professorial moments. As Mitt Romney points out, the reason why Obama is not up to the job is because he has never had one.

Now the world is on fire and the economy is crashing. President Obama is lost, grasping for answers. Like an aging stripper, Obama is naked for all to see, and the flaws outweigh the beauty. After awhile, people get judged on “doing” rather than just “being.”

This is the real Anthony Weiner. He is trying to take over the second toughest executive position in America after the presidency. Being Mayor of New York City requires a certain skill set. Rudy Giuliani was a federal prosecutor. Michael Bloomberg, for all of his flaws, created a business empire.

Anthony Weiner has never worked. To give a man the keys to the greatest mayoral kingdom without him ever having run anything cannot happen. To look police officers, firefighters, and EMTs in the eye without having any knowledge of what they go through is simply too much for this city. In the real world, the Dark Knight does not show up and save the day. Batman is fictional, but the challenge of running Gotham City is real.

This is not about sexual deviancy, corruption, bribery, financial patronage, or their bid-tampering cousins. This is about competence. Chicago is corrupt, but Richard Daley and Rahm Emanuel were tough enough for their jobs because they had real life battles. Bill Clinton was Slick Willie, but he ran an actual state. Even Eliot Spitzer was a prosecutor at one point.

Even if Anthony Weiner were free of scandal, he would still be no better from a merit standpoint than Barack Obama was in 2008.

Obama will make millions on the speaking circuit once he leaves office. Plenty of liberals will throw money at him to reward him for merely existing. Anthony Weiner does not have that luxury. He has a wife and child to feed. He has to do something, and he has to do it soon.

His first step is to go learn how to do something. Whether he attends an actual school or gets his degree online, he needs to learn a marketable skill. For the sake of his family, he should have his wife help him with his homework to ensure educational and behavioral compliance.
