Mitt Romney's Swiss bank accounts: You show me yours first

Mitt Romney has Swiss bank accounts, which is legal. In exchange for disclosing his holdings, the most transparent administration in history may wish to offer disclosures of their own.

LOS ANGELES, July 11, 2012 — The latest attempt to demonize Mitt Romney for having worked hard and succeeded in life revolves around his Swiss bank accounts. There is no allegation that Mr. Romney has committed any crimes, so this latest class warfare attempt could be what Barack Obama would call a “teachable moment.”

Mr. Obama promised to be the most transparent President in history, so a compromise should be worked out. If Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise can settle their differences quickly and amicably, then certainly Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney can each give a little.

Mr. Romney should reveal the amount of money he has overseas. He should do this the day after certain actions by Mr. Obama are undertaken, completed, and publicly disclosed in the name of “fairness.”

President Obama should stop hiding behind Executive Privilege with regards to Fast and Furious. He should order Attorney General Eric Holder to turn over all documents requested by Congressman Darrell Issa. A dead border guard is more significant than whether Governor Romney’s overseas investments include a preference for Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola stock.

Mr. Obama should turn over all documents related to the decision to fund Solyndra and other green companies despite their shaky financial situations. Surely the wasting of taxpayer dollars matters more than what Mr. Romney did with his private funds legally.

Mr. Obama should turn over all documents related to the passing of the Affordable Care Act. From the Louisiana Purchase to the Cornhusker Kickback to various waivers given to unions, questions deserve answers. Side deals affecting one-sixth of the American economy matter more than a few million dollars owned by Mr. Romney. After all, there are no improprieties alleged in Mr. Romney’s finances.

Mr. Obama should release his college transcripts. He declares himself an intellect, and a 4.0 GPA would certainly bolster that claim.

Mr. Obama should release all of his publications while with the Harvard Law Review. He is a self-proclaimed legal scholar and Constitutional expert. The people should know what he believed, what he learned, and what he taught. This is not about his certificate of birth. This is about his thinking. Rumors that his “peers” were underwhelmed with his efforts and abilities should be put to rest.

Mr. Obama, like Bill Clinton before him, faces swirling allegations of accepting illegal contributions from foreign nationals. Mr. Obama should turn over all correspondence between any member of his administration or campaign team and anybody working for George Soros. Mr. Soros is a convicted felon, and surely Mr. Obama would never accept blood money from dirty sources.

Mr. Obama, like Bill Clinton before him, has a habit of trying to use the power of the American government to intimidate political opponents. All correspondence regarding investigations into the Koch Brothers, Richard Mellon Scaife, Rupert Murdoch, and Frank Van Der Sloot should be turned over. If they have been accused of crimes, those crimes should be reported. If not, the reasons for the investigations should be disclosed.

Any investigation into Mitt Romney and his family that goes beyond traditional opposition research should be disclosed and justified. If tax dollars were used to fund these investigations, that should be disclosed.

Mr. Obama holds fundraisers with Hollywood celebrities such as George Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker. Do any of the people he hobnobs with at fundraisers for him have Swiss bank accounts?

If so, they should turn over their bank statements just to be sure Mr. Obama is not receiving money from a source he sees as less than legitimate.

Mr. Obama should turn over all documents related to the decision to nationalize General Motors. Under normal circumstances, violating the order of payments that took money from shareholders and gave it to unions would be illegal. Under what statute did Mr. Obama rely on? What legal counselors advised him? Surely this is more important than Mr. Romney’s work at Bain Capital, which is not being accused of crimes.

Mr. Romney is being accused of being wealthy. He is not being accused of anything illegal.

Mr. Obama is mired in several scandals that may rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.

As soon as Mr. Obama finds his moral transparency compass, he can then throw stones from his glass McMansion at Mr. Romney.
