Yitzchak Shamir--Shalom Haver, hero of Israel

Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir passed away at the age of 96. He was a true hero. Sadly, leftists praising his legacy are engaging in revisionist history.

LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2012—Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir passed away at the age of 96. He was one of the great leaders of all time. Yet while many people are praising him, his political opponents are engaging in revisionist history.

The real Yitzchak Shamir saw his parents murdered in the Holocaust. He headed up the Mossad, tracking down anti-Jewish murderers trying to create a second Holocaust. He became Prime Minister of Israel and oversaw what still exists today: Arab states who refuse to accept the existence of Israel and want to wipe it off the map.

Mr. Shamir is now being “praised” by leftists who noted that he took “courageous” steps for peace. Conservatives understand that this is code for unconditional surrender.

The new narrative is that the steps Mr. Shamir took are what led to the Oslo accords. The real narrative is that Israel surrendered to a bloodthirsty, genocidal lunatic named Yassir Arafat in a peace process where there never was any peace. Labor sang Kumbaya not by building on Likud policies, but by reversing them. Yitzchak Rabin did not continue anything of Mr. Shamir. He reversed Mr. Shamir.

The United States actively interfered and used loan guarantees as leverage to force out an Israeli Prime Minister willing to fight for his country with one more pliant.

Another outright lie about Mr. Shamir was that he used “restraint” during the first Gulf War by not retaliating. He was praised for this restraint by those perfectly willing to let Israel be obliterated.

Publicly Israel was seen as tolerating Scud Missile attacks. Privately Arabs were screaming that Israel actually was covertly retaliating. Israeli planes with Israeli pilots were painted over with the American logo.

Shamir was always a fighter because he had to be.

More importantly, on issues of surrender, he said “no” to everything.

He did not give up land in the hopes that it would lead to peace, as Israel did with Lebanon in 2000. He fought for every inch of Israel, and was rewarded by being one of the longest serving Israeli Prime Ministers.

So while people are right to praise him for so many different reasons, he was not in any way connected to the peace pipe smoking, Kumbaya loving Israeli leftists who listen to “world opinion” and United Nations anti-Semites.

He was not the man who catered to Jewish leftists in San Francisco, Boca Raton, or the Upper Westside of Manhattan.

He was certainly not the man who catered to the Arabs.

He was the man who defiantly protected Israel by understanding one truism.

Force works.

Through military force and the sheer force of his iron will, Mr. Shamir kept Israel in the survival column.

He was a warrior to the end because he had to be.

He wanted peace, but understand that peace cannot be negotiated with people committed to murdering your entire people.

With the absence of a peace partner, he was committed to victory. He got it, and victory brought security.

So to those who try to rewrite the story of Yitzchak Shamir, stand up and do what he always did when confronted with lies and atrocities.

Just say no.

Farewell, Mr. Shamir. You were a giant among men, and a hero everywhere to those who actually understand how the real world works.
