LOS ANGELES, April 18, 2012 — President Obama’s recent trip to Colombia was marred when several of his Secret Service agents were caught in a prostitution scandal. An outraged President Obama demanded that the matter be resolved.
There is a congressional investigation, and some of the agents have already been reassigned.
While politicians are often way too quick to express outrage, this situation justifies the anger. Secret Service agents are responsible for protecting the life of the leader of the free world. They have to be prepared to take a bullet for him. They cannot put themselves in a situation where they can be subjected to blackmail.
Men often go to great lengths to hide scandals. Would a Secret Service agent be so desperate to protect his own reputation that he would allow an assassin to shoot the President? This is a horror that cannot ever occur.
This is not the first time that American national security has been compromised by a prostitute. A movie “Secrets of the Red Bedroom” told the tale of prostitutes who were really Russian spies. They seduced American men at the highest levels and fed missile secrets to the Soviet government.
Yet while people get indignant over sexually irresponsible Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel, one question remains.
Why did so many people not understand this same dynamic applied to President Bill Clinton (and for that matter, Senator John Edwards)?
During the impeachment trial of 1998, the left kept saying that this was “all about sex.” This was absolutely false. Forget momentarily that Bill Clinton lied under oath and trashed the Constitution. Forget that he made a mockery of the rule of law.
What mattered most was that he jeopardized the United States of America itself.
Suppose Congressmen Dick Gephardt had found out about the affair. Would he have blackmailed President Clinton to give up his New Democrat Agenda and move far to the left?
Suppose House Speaker Newt Gingrich had found out about the affair. Would he have blackmailed President Clinton into signing all of the Contract With America?
Suppose the leaders of Iran and Syria had found out about the affair. Would they have blackmailed President Clinton for munitions? Would they have been given a free hand to blow up Israel without reprisals?
These examples may seem far-fetched to some, but what applies to the Secret Service has to apply even more to the man they protect.
Monica Lewinsky was not just a punch line to a late night talk show host. She was a potential blackmail victim, as well as a possible blackmailer herself.
So when Democrats are busy lambasting those who compromise the safety of a Democrat in the White House, remind them how intellectually and ethically compromised they were when it was a Democratic President himself putting himself in recklessly avoidable situations.
