LOS ANGELES, July 11, 2011 — Barack Obama is now officially the affirmative action president.
This is where the perpetually outraged left begins hyperventilating, followed by uncontrollable screams of “racism.” Water is wet, Hezbollah blows stuff up, and leftists throw utterly boring race-baiting temper tantrums.
Speaking of uninteresting, our leader is now an affirmative action project gone bad. This may have negative ramifications for future black Americans, which would be wrong.
Replacing real affirmative action makes me uncomfortable because real racism still exists. It has been marginalized but not eradicated. The idea of the down-trodden being granted a helping hand getting job interviews is a good thing. An interview does not guarantee a job. Most importantly, once the person gets the job, they are forced to perform as everybody else.
The National Football League understands this. “The Rooney Rule” requires that when a head coaching vacancy opens, one minority candidate must be interviewed. Yet upon getting the job, black head coaches face the same scrutiny as their white counterparts.
Wins result in glory while losses get coaches fired. This is how affirmative action should work. Give a helping hand with the interview process but not with job performance.
This brings us to Barack Obama. To say he was elected solely because of his race would be unfair and wrong. Many blacks and guilty white liberals did love the idea of a multi-racial leader, but most Americans turned to him after Lehman Brothers burned. He was given a chance to lead. Yet then upon taking office, something happened that is an insult to everybody who believes in affirmative action but also values merit.
The standards were lowered for Barack Obama with regards to actual on the job performance.
His defenders began by making excuses for him and never stopped. The worse things got during his tenure, the more he was propped up. He was either too big to fail, or worse “too black to fail.” Any criticism of him was seen as racist. This defies logic since he was voted in to begin with.
Those who expected results out of him should have noticed how substanceless he was on the campaign trail. His idea for budget cutting was “getting rid of programs that don’t work.” He offered nonsensical platitudes such as “tomorrow will be different from today.”
Of course it will. It is called a calendar.
Yet he was given the job because people believed that “hope” and “change” would lead to solutions.
Three years into his presidency, he is still complaining about the mess he inherited. This is where the lowering of the bar comes in. He actually takes credit for a lack of accomplishments. Non-achievements are called achievements simply because he says so, without his being challenged.
Presidents are usually graded on jobs created. He is judged by “jobs saved or created.” Jobs saved? There is absolutely no metric to measure this. It is an unprovable assertion that the left treats as gospel. He has not created jobs. Even he arrogantly admitted through laughter that “shovel ready was not as shovel ready as we thought.” That is failure.
Some say his stimulus package saved us from the next Great Depression. This also cannot be proven. Those who want to praise him and Timothy Geithner for making hard choices are engaging in flights of fancy. The real hard choices were made by George W. Bush and Hank Paulson.
Mr. Obama and his sycophants want to blame President Bush for the problem but then take credit for turning things around. Hank Paulson got TARP passed before Mr. Obama ever took office. All Mr. Obama did was take the fragile but stabilizing economy and pass a stimulus bill that did not stimulate anything. Yet liberals still praise Mr. Obama as a total success, turning the very meaning of the word upside down.
When Mr. Obama was challenged on his many failed campaign promises, he had the unmitigated gall to say that he “did or tried to do” everything he promised.
Tried to do? When did trying to do something become acceptable? Can anybody remember his predecessor being praised for attempting to do things and failing?
This insidious “soft bigotry of lowered expectations” will infect the 2012 election campaign.
Incumbents are supposed to run positive reelection campaigns. Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “Morning in America” campaign embodies this. His best commercial was entitled “Leadership that’s working.” Mr. Obama cannot say this because he would be laughed out of the room by everybody to the right of the Jayson Blair (formerly New York) Times.
This means Mr. Obama will have to run a slash and burn negative reelection campaign normally reserved for challengers. His entire rationale is “reelect me or things will be worse.” This is uninspiring, and again, unknowable. He was allowed to be a blank slate as a challenger. He cannot be as the current leader.
On foreign policy Mr. Obama is also held to a lower standard. Killing bin Laden was a major positive, but also an aberration in a failed record. “Leading from behind” has America in a conflict in Libya that Mr. Obama refuses to call a war. In Syria people are being shot by the dozens on a daily basis, with no end in sight. People who would normally demand that the leader of the free world “do something,” are now left to lament that “maybe the job is too big for one man.”
No, the job is too big for this particular man. He had a light resume, and has not risen to the occasion.
Yet those on the left continue to praise him. This is awful because all it does is hurt other people who probably could do the job.
Those who hate George W. Bush say that Jeb Bush of Florida cannot run for president because the last name is tarnished. They also turn around and attack Rick Perry because apparently all Texans are the same.
So is the solution to simply deny black people another shot at the office?
Of course not. The failure is not inherent in Mr. Obama’s race. It is in his ideology.
Herman Cain, Condoleeza Rice, Ward Connerly, Clarence Thomas, and Michael Steele all achieved great heights based on merit.
Conversely, George McGovern, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, and John Kerry also failed to reach the top due to a lack of merit.
None of those other men were propped up. Even liberals quietly grouse about how Al Gore ran a lousy campaign and how insufferable John Kerry and his grating patrician accent are.
So from now on, liberals need to pretend that Barack Obama is 100% Caucasian. It is the only way they will be able to view him objectively as a man, not a demigod.
To refuse to allow any person, business, or entity to fail is to ensure greater failure in the long run. We see it with stocks and with companies. Barack Obama was given the financial equivalent of “portfolio insurance.”
In the 1980s, portfolio insurance led to people taking ridiculous risks that resulted in the 1987 stock market crash.
In 2004, the repeated promotion of Jayson Blair despite widespread dissatisfaction with his work led to the destruction of the New York Times.
In 2005, liberals putting political correctness over sound decision making led to the eventual collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that hurt us all by 2008.
In 2009, the refusal of the left to allow any criticism of Barack Obama only encouraged him to see himself as invincible and pass policies that the left trumpeted as successes simply because he enacted them.
2011 is not about Barack Obama getting a job out of thin air. It is about judging him solely on his policies and his policies alone. It is not about his predecessor or his possible successors.
He must be judged on his merits, from his failed economic policies to his burdensome failed regulations of health care, financial services, and the environment. He must be judged on having no solution to an 86 day oil spill to his harassing businesses and then claiming that American should “innovate.” He must be judged on his failed foreign policy.
Nobody cares if Barack Obama is light-skinned or dark-skinned. His problem is that he is thin-skinned and unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the job. He delegates everything because he enjoys ribbon-cutting ceremonies but not lifting anything heavier than those plastic scissors.
It is time for the special treatment of this man to stop. It is an insult to blacks and whites with actual records of real celebratory achievements.
The affirmative action presidency needs to end. The excuses need to stop now.
So does the Obama presidency, already crushed under the weight of unrealistic expectations by people who wanted to see Utopia at all costs rather than see the truth of one mediocre man never being more than that.
