Week 2 Preview Dancing With The Stars All-Stars: Jive and quick step

SAN DIEGO, September 30, 2012 – The competitors on Dancing With the Stars All-Stars get to step it up right away in Week 2, literally.

Everyone dances either the Jive or the Quickstep this week. These are dances that demand a lot of energy and nimble feet. We will find out quickly who has a real chance at the Mirror Ball Trophy this season.

Dancing the jive: Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough; Helio Castroneves and Chelsie Hightower; Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovoloni; Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya; Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd, and Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy.

Shawn and Derek and Helio and Chelsie should shine in the jive. Drew and Anna and Kirstie and Maks have a lot of work to do and could be in trouble. Melissa and Tony have the talent but do they have the stamina? And can Gilles and Peta project the sort of lively personality the jive requires?

Dancing the quickstep are Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson; Sabrina Bryan and Louie Van Amstel; Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff; Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas; Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy; and Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke.

The quickstep is difficult for many couples. If Sabrina finds some finesse she and Louie may do well. Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke have the technical skill but do they have the smooth style? Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson need to project their sunniest personalities to do well. Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy may pull off a big surprise, and the producers must think so too. They are dancing next to last in the 11th spot, which is a big advantage.

Thanks to comments made by the competitors on Twitter, we know at least two-thirds of the dance order, and we will update this column until we have the whole lineup set. See the list below.

It’s increasingly apparent that the performance order has an influence on the votes. The show producers can help out a couple by giving them a favorable spot in the lineup. On the fan blogs there was some grumbling about Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy dancing in the next to last spot, with fans saying that ABC was giving a boost to “one of its own” since Monaco is a featured actress on an ABC soap opera, “General Hospital.”

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas need to improve their scores. The fans can only save them for so long. Photo: ABC/Adam Taylor.

Bristol Palin commented in an interview with On The Red Carpet that her song this week is “her anthem,” and that she sings it every day. It’s Redneck Woman by country artist Gretchen Wilson.

Let’s hope the song inspires her. Absent a big surprise from one of the other couples. Bristol and Mark along with Drew and Anna and Kirstie and Maks are the couples likely to run into trouble and end up at the bottom of the scoreboard. Kirstie and Maks’ fans will probably save them, leaving the other two couples and whoever else stumbles or puts on a lackluster performance in the bottom three this week.
