WASHINGTON, November 30, 2012 —Gold Rush has been a gold mine for Discovery Channel. Discovery Channel’s numbers for the show actually beat CBS, NBC and FOX in the key broadcast television 18-49 demographic during prime time last Friday night (Nov. 23rd). When considering the promotional advantage major networks have over the pure cable nets, this is no small feat.

The Gold Rush story line is simple enough in all these quick riches series. Take every cent you have and gamble it on finding gold before running out of operating capital. Whether the show’s treasure hunters are in Africa, the Amazon, or the Bering Sea, you can’t help but pull for them as they battle both the elements and each other.

Who does not like the idea of cheating the traditional paths to achieving wealth beyond avarice by getting it done in one short gold hunting season? Besides, Americans love a quick fix. Case in point: in 2010 U.S. lottery sales totaled $58 billion. The latest PowerBall winners aside, tune in tonight and watch a very different journey exploring how a few very brave and crazy people choose to seek their own “overnight” fortunes.

I was born and educated in Southwest Virginia, traveled with my job all over America in my twenties and early thirties then came back to the mountains to raise my daughter.

I’ve been employed as everything from a quality control technician in industrial construction, to a mail processing plant manager, to postmaster of a small town. I’ve been to forty nine of the fifty states, as well as many other countries. Traveling will always be a passion I indulge, and something I’ll call upon often in my writing.

I come from a long line of story tellers, and will shamelessly exploit a family tree resplendent with colorful and unique characters, both past and present.

In short my perspective will reflect the pride and familiarity I have of my Appalachian heritage. My stories will be a reflection of the values I believe we hold dearest here, all embellished with a healthy dose of Southern Appalachian flare.
