SAN DIEGO, November 12, 2012 – Ballroom dancing is about technique, precision, and speed. But it is also about individual taste.
Judge Len Goodman is from the serious professional competition world of ballroom dance, and he judges by this standard. Frequently he and the fans clash in their opinion. He also clashes with his fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.
Case in point: Shawn Johnson received a 7 from Len for her trio samba with Mark Ballas and Derek Hough set to a tribal them; Carrie Ann scored it a 10 and Bruno a 9.
As we have been saying, if you were ever going to vote, this is the week. All couples danced an individual routine with a Veterans Day theme plus the Trio routine. These were added to last week’s scores, for a total possible of 100 points. There were three routines with perfect scores of 30. Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovoloni danced a Boogie Woogle Bugle Boy quickstep with endless energy; and a fierce paso doble with Henry Byalikov. See the paso trio in the video above.
The other perfect 30 went to Emmitt Smith, Cheryl Burke, and Kym Johnson for a wicked, colorful and far more traditional samba than Shawn.
After two weeks, here is the leaderboard. Melissa and Tony are far in front of the rest of the competitors. Then there is a bunched group of six competitors separated by only one point from high to low. Kirstie Alley is bringing up the rear with 79 points.
The first score is from last week including the individual dance and swing marathon; second score is the individual dance from Monday, the third score is for the trio dances Monday:
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani: 39 plus 30 plus 30 = 99 points
Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough: 38 + 29.5 + 26 = 93.5 points
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke: 34 + 29 + 30 = 93 points
Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy: 36 + 28 + 28.5 = 92.5 points
Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff: 33 + 29.5 + 29 = 92.5 points
Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd: 33.5 + 29.5 + 29 = 92 points
Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 28 + 27 + 24 = 79 points
Fan votes will make the difference for all those stars in the middle of the pack. With a double elimination, it will be a shocker if Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy don’t go home. Apolo Ohno put on two weeks’ worth of terrific dances but he will need help from fans to hang in there and he hasn’t been getting the votes. He deserves to go to the finals with Melissa and Shawn at this point. Emmitt Smith had a good week and he needed it to stay in the hunt.
