SAN DIEGO, February 12, 2012 - Until the eve of the show, the 54th annual Grammy Awards planned on holding to its popular current format focusing on performances from the hottest acts in the music industry including Adele's return following vocal cord surgery, a Tony Bennett duet with Carrie Underwood, Coldplay with Rihanna, and a tribute to the late Etta James by Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt. Nineteen performances will hit the stage during the three-and-a-half hour broadcast, along with select award presentations from the 78 Grammy Award categories.
But the shocking news of singer Whitney Houston's death at age 48 just as her mentor Clive Davis's pre-Grammys party was about to get underway has knocked the wind out of the event. Tributes and condolensces poured in from artists who admired Houston's unmistakable gifts as a singer.
Nevertheless, the show must go on and the Grammys will proceed as schedules starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time/5 p.m. Pacific Time Sunday night on CBS. It will also stream live online at Grammy.com
The Grammy website will also stream the red carpet arrivals and pre-telecast awards starting at 3 p.m EST/12 noon PST. Producers have announced a simple tribute to Houston will be incorporated into the show, and confirm singer Jennifer Hudson will perform.
