SAN DIEGO, April 29, 2012 –  “Dancing With The Stars” competitors will step up their game in week 7 with a team dance in addition to their individual routines.

Week 6 is “Classical Week.” Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd, William Levy and Cheryl Burke, and Jaleel White and Peta Murgatroyd are performing a Viennese waltz.

Performing the Argentine Tango are Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower, and Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough will take on the Paso Doble, and Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas will dance the Rumba.

Unconfirmed dance order is William Levy and Cheryl Burke; Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower; Jaleel White and Kym Johnson; Maria Menounos and Derek Hough; Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas; Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd; and Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy.

When the couples have wrapped up their individual routines, they will take to the dance floor for the first team dances of Season 14.

Team Paso includes Melissa Gilbert, William Levy, and Donald Driver. Team Tango includes Katherine Jenkins, Maria Menounos, Roshon Fegan, and Jaleel White.

What was going through the producers’ heads when they assigned the team members? Or were they selected by a random draw? Gilbert dancing the Paso with Levy and Driver seems like a terrible idea. She’s paired with two powerhouse male competitors, with a third strong male performer in Maks Chmerkovskiy. Gilbert will be alongside Cheryl Burke and Peta Murgatroyd. She will be the one holding the rest of the group back and she’ll know it.

The larger teams have a disadvantage because more people have to stay in sync, with more margin for error. It’s balanced a bit because the Tango allows for greater synchronization since much of it is danced in hold where the professionals can help their partners. The Tango will allow less variation than the bigger, bolder moves of the Paso Doble, but with Gilbert as part of the Paso group things may be evened out.

The show will open with violinist Joshua Bell playing Vivaldi. Jackie Evancho of “America’s Got Talent” fame and Vittorio Grigolo will sing.  Gavin DeGraw fans, don’t miss Tuesday’s show. He’ll sing his new single “Sweeter” on the show.  On Tuesday’s elimination show, the two lowest scoring contestants will face off doing the Rumba.

The individual scores are staying tight as the overall quality of the dancing improves and levels off. Last week it was the second score from the marathon that made a big difference and put Menounos and Fegan in jeopardy and Fegan in the dance off. Expect the same thing to happen with the team dances. Half of the competitors will get a boost in points, instantly putting the members of the “losing” team at a disadvantage. They will be counting on fan votes.

Will Donald Driver finally get one score of 10 that he covets so much? Will it be the first week with a perfect score of 30? Len Goodman has been stingy despite some deserving performances by the likes of Katherine Jenkins, Jaleel White, and William Levy.

“Dancing With the Stars” returns for week 7 of the competition on Monday night, April 30, 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time, on the ABC Television Network.
