Week 6 is “Motown Week.” We have a buffet of ballroom styles this week. Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd and Maria Menounos and Derek Hough dance the foxtrot. Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower and William Levy and Cheryl Burke are dancing the rumba. Jaleel White and Kym Johnson are dancing the quick step. Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy get a Viennese waltz. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas dance the samba. Gladys Knight and Tristan McManus are believed to be dancing the jive.
For the first time, Motown artists will perform along with the Harold Wheeler Orchestra, including the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Martha Reeves.
The only confirmation of dance order is that William Levy is dancing last, which means he gets the least amount of rest before becoming right back out on the dance floor for a new addition to the show. But at least he’s dancing the rumba which is among the less aerobically taxing dances.
After all the couples perform their individual routines, they will all hit the dance floor for a “Motown Marathon.” The show has staged marathons in previous seasons. All the couples dance on the floor together. The judges will start eliminating couples until four are left. The last four earn points: ten points for first place, nine for second place, eight for third place, and seven for fourth place. The competitors are supposed to show off classic “Motown era moves,” whatever this means.
The highlight will surely be the presence of Empress of Soul Gladys Knight, a Motown legend in her own right. Knight told OnTheRedCarpet.com “all my friends are coming.” She said she hoped for a fast paced dance this week, “but whatever we do get we’ll be true to it and we’ll enjoy it as it is.” The big question is which song she’ll draw. One of her own, perhaps?
Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy will dance their waltz to a performance by Smokey Robinson.
Derek Hough promises a “clean, classy foxtrot” with Maria Menounos after the week of The Big Kiss.
Jaleel White performed in “Dreamgirls” so this could be a hint of what we’ll see from him and Kym Johnson on Monday. Johnson has a talent for creating classic Broadway-styled ballroom so we’ll see what she can come up with for their quick step.
Roshon Fegan needs to continue to channel his inner William Levy to get into the right rumba mood and pull off his dance with Chelsie Hightower. She tweeted this week, “Roshon is doing great with rumba!” He is such a talented dancer. Love teaching him.” Motown should be good to Fegan, especially if he gets to dance to some vintage Jackson 5.
The scores are getting tighter as the competitors improve each week. It doesn’t take much of a difference in scores or votes to end up in the “Dance Duel” on Tuesday night. Expect Donald Driver, William Levy, and Maria Menounos to be at the top of the leaderboard, and Melissa Gilbert and possibly Gladys Knight or Jaleel White to face each other in the duel on Tuesday.
“Dancing With the Stars” returns for week 6 of the competition on Monday night, April 16, 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time, on the ABC Television Network.
