Wanda Sykes tries to save a genre that is dying a painful death right now: The Late Night Talk Show.

If anyone can pull it off ...

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes is about to launch a new late night talk show. And why not? She's quick, she's funny, and she's uninhibited. Anyone who has suffered through The New Adventures of Old Christine knows it's Sykes who deserves a sitcom of her own, not Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

And anyone who has suffered through any of the late night talk shows lately knows if anyone deserves a shot at a late night talk show ... it's anyone.  Jay Leno somehow forgot how to be funny over the summer, Conan O'Brien gives me the creeps. Jimmy Fallon is a twitchy disaster. David Letterman has gone from hipster to "Old Uncle Who Needs a Refresher in Good Touch/Bad Touch." I've even started watching Nightline!

So why not Sykes? How could she possibly do worse? (Oh, wait, remember the Chevy Chase talk show, way back in the 1990s?!! Heh heh)

Sykes takes to the air on Fox, Saturday late night. Check local listings, etc. One extra reason for Washington Times readers to give her a chance, Fox says she got her start in Washington, doing her first stand up routines in DC. My biggest question, why stick her on Saturday night? Put her up against the established shows. I'll bet she'd be eating their lunch.

It's hard not to root for her. Let's see what she's got.

Hey, and as an added bonus ... I caught Irish rock band Guggenheim Grotto live last night. In addition to being great singers, the guys turn out to be real fans of old-school videos. You know, from back when MTV showed music. Man, I could curl up on the couch at my buddy's house and watch those old videos for hours. The Grotto guys tell me they're big Peter Gabriel fans (remember the video for Sledgehammer? Dancing chicken bodies! Awesome)

Here's the Guggenheim Grotto's video for Beautiful Ideas ... see the early '80s video vibe? Dig it ...

It's all about TV, any place any time, and by that, I mean time-shifting, DVRing, online, downloaded, DVD'ed, shared, slung, and digested. Don't let the 'nets tell you when and what to watch, get out there and explore! There is great stuff all around you, you just gotta find it.
