SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR TO THE TEA PARTY REPORT - CATHY COLON

In reading the news that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has initiated a lawsuit against the federal government, allegedly alleging that our illustrious bureaucratic government had failed to secure our borders, one might wonder if they had fallen asleep and awoke in a different country. How in the world did we get to this place?? How is it that an American state government, with 'states rights', has to sue the American President... just to enforce American laws that are already in place? As my daddy used to say, it's bassackwards. Arizona is seeing a significant increase in crime, drugs and human trafficking.  This is not new news to Texas, New Mexico or California, either.  As of late, we have been subjected to the news of several Americans crossing over into Mexico and ending up a murder statistic.  As the criminals/drug traffickers/murderers become emboldened, what more will we see on our side of the border?

I am Hispanic.  I'm supposed to vilify Ms. Brewer but I just can't do it.

My father legally immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. I love being an American and I LOVE my heritage. What I have no tolerance for is ILLEGAL immigration. I am from a large family of legal immigrants. I have seen certain family members struggle for years to obtain their citizenship. It took many years and a great deal of money. I've seen friends sacrifice much, just to see their family members become citizens. I have one American friend who was living abroad; his parent needed to come to this country due to aging and health. Because he was the only one who could sponsor his family member, he had to uproot his wife and children, leaving his job in the other country to return home to America. Love and sacrifice—it's what you do when you when you respect the laws of the land. It's what you do if you are an honorable and upright person. If you're not honorable or upright, then you steal your way in.

That we must enforce existing laws regarding ILLEGAL immigration, should be a no-brainer.  Why is there even any debate on the issue?  The fact that I am against illegal immigration obviously does not equal racism, as evidenced by my surname.  By the same token, I refuse to automatically think someone is racist if they are not a “person of color”.  One would think that we should have made significantly more progress regarding the issue of race.  I maintain that we have.  Those left-wing politicians who make money stoking the fires of racism would have you believe otherwise.

Again, it should be a no-brainer and yet “we the people” fight.  We're fighting each other.  We're wary of one another.  For fear of being labeled racist, we dare not broach this subject.  And maybe that's why politicians have made no progress towards securing our borders: fear of being labeled a racist.

It's a very, very dangerous thing to use the word 'racist'.  In the moment you call someone a racist, every word that proceeds out of that person's mouth will sound racist, no matter what they have said.  Certain left-wing liberals are well aware of this fact, but they don't care.  So long as they are still in power and have plenty of our tax dollars in their pockets, they don't care.  Towards that end, race-baiting becomes a tool to bolster their political image.  But if “we the people” take that bait and fight each other, we are no longer focused on other important issues.

No, I cannot vilify Ms. Brewer for upholding the law.  It's the race-baiting, which is the 'modus operandi' of far too many politicians and liberal left-wing media, that must stop.  So long as we quibble and fight about such “small” issues, we will not see what's really happening to our great country... Rome is burning and Nero fiddles.  And that, I think, is the greater tragedy.
