WASHINGTON, April 28, 2013 – Is President Obama a Liberal fantasy come to life? Or is he just the lamest duck ever?
An anecdotal remark by President Obama at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner dismissed a statement made earlier by journalist Maureen Dowd. Dowd said, according to the President, that he, Obama is not nearly as tough as he should be.
That he needs to be tougher, like Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepherd in Sorkin’s The American President (1995).
Hollywood fantasies aside, Dowd has a point. President Obama’s Presidency has been spent avoiding tough situations and the perception that he is “the angry black man” that whites fear.
His avoidance of displays of anger might work if only a stronger team surrounded him.
At the top of that team is Vice President Joe. VP Joe lacks the ability to effectively employ the strong-arm tactics used by, say, VP Dick Cheney.
Joe’s affable pandering, joking and multiple mischaracterizations has made president Obama appear weak and ineffective in dealing with Congress.
Then there is the oft-repeated the “Senate Republicans/House Republicans aka the white man “Wont let me” line on a weekly basis.
He trotted out this line again at the Correspondence Dinner when he joked:
“I know Republicans are still sorting out what happened in 2012, but one thing they all agree on is they need to do a better job reaching out to minorities.
And look, call me self-centered, but I can think of one minority they could start with. Hello? Think of me as a trial run, you know?”
Yes, Obama is self-centered and selfish which is why he cannot compromise on the budget, but continuing the tongue in cheek fun and merriment of the Correspondents dinner, President Obama addressed the actor, present in the audience peppered with liberal glitterati:
“Michael, what’s your secret man? Could it be that you were an actor in an Aaron Sorkin liberal fantasy? Might that have something to do with it?”
The legacy of the 44th President will continue to weaken as he fails to work on the China trade imbalance, President Bashar Al-Assad use of chemical weapons in Syria, terrorism and the economy.
His management team made of the “under 30” set that is presently occupying the West Wing are more concerned with social media placement than solutions for a stalling economy.
Obama’s liberal fantasy is that we care about the gun debate, the economy is getting better, that non-confrontation works and that it doesn’t matter who killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty and Sean Smith – all killed by an inactive White House that failed to respond, leaving Marines on a rooftop to die.
It time for Obama to toughen up, provide the American people real answers, crack down on Syria, submit a real budget, and be more Presidential.
And leave the Sorkin fantasy ideal behind.
Because President Obama is just not Matthew Shepard and America is not a Hollywood set.
