SAN FRANCISCO, August 22, 2013 — After five races in the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, Emirates Team New Zealand leads Italy’s Luna Rossa Challenge 4-1. The winner of the America’s Cup Challenger Series advances to meet defender Oracle Team USA in the 34th America’s Cup next month.
Emirates Team New Zealand won the previous Louis Vuitton Cup in 2007 against Luna Rossa Challenge, in a 5-0 sweep. The Kiwis won’t be sweeping this series, but need three more victories to advance to the America’s Cup match.
Wind conditions have kept the Louis Vuitton Cup from being on schedule, as Tuesday was the first day in the series when two races were held together. In previous days, the second race of the day was postponed due to high winds. On Tuesday, San Francisco Bay had winds between 12 and 17 knots, both races started as scheduled and both crews completed the course without incident.
“We had a solid day all around. The guys sailed really well, really happy with how the boat’s going in these conditions,” said Emirates Team New Zealand tactician Ray Davies. “We’re stoked to come away with a couple of wins. The Italians have picked up their game.”
In the best-of-13 series, the upcoming Louis Vuitton Cup Final races are as scheduled:
Friday, Aug. 23: Final Race 6 (1:10 p.m. PDT)
Saturday, Aug. 24: Final Race 7 (1:10 p.m. PDT) and Final Race 8 (2:10 p.m. PDT)
If necessary, Sunday, Aug. 25: Final Race 9 (1:10 p.m. PDT) and Final Race 10 (2:10 p.m. PDT)
