We are all born the same way, but we die in such different, exciting, unimaginable ways! And in similar exciting, unimaginable ways, we also survive. While one person dies in a freak car crash, another miraculously survives. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people survive the battle of tough diseases like cancer, while some die of a simple fever. Some die as soon as they are born, and some break world records for living the longest. Weirdest are the cases of those who remember instances from past lives, some predict deaths, and some wake up from years of coma only to see that others around have moved on!
Who is managing, or as some sadists would say, mismanaging all of this? Who keeps a record of who died when and who is due to be born to which parents? There must be some superpower somewhere. Any non-believer reading this article would simply give a scientific molecular theory and put a sense of logic behind the working of this universe. And a believer like me will then ask, that’s fine, but who brings all of these scientific elements together?
The battle between science and religion will continue.
As I was browsing through the most recent updates on my Facebook page today, I thought about what will happen to my account on Facebook, twitter, google plus and what have you when I am dead? If I die suddenly of a heart failure, or a car accident, who will update my Facebook page? I am usually so prompt! The world knows when I wake up in the morning, which guy I thought was very cute when I saw him drive past as I sat in my balcony to read the morning newspaper, when I had a bad day at work, whom did I fight with, which gadget I bought….gosh!
The list is just endless. When this life ends, one of the most important events of all, I won’t be able to share it on Facebook! If I imagine for a second that my spirit will post for me, then I will end up scaring all the 200 something friends I have!
As I wondered about all this in a comical way and thought of asking this question to my friends on facebook, I laid my hands on the pocket-size version of the Bhagwad Gita I have. Bhagwad Gita is the voice of Lord Krishna. It carries the messages of Lord Krishna as were given to Arjuna by him at the epic battle of Mahabharata. I didn’t know that the Gita will have an answer to my questions on status updates!
The truth is that atman, or the soul, is beyond status updates and photo uploads. The soul travels millions of years and thousands of bodies from one part of the universe to the other. Lord Krishna in the epic battle of Mahabharata explains to his disciple Arjuna the journey of the soul.
The soul is nitya (always exists) and shashvat (permanent) according to
“na jayate mriyate va kadacin
nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah
ajo nityah sasvato ’yam purano
na hanyate hanyamane sarire”
“vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya
navani grhnati naro’parani
tatha sarirani vihaya jirnany
anyani samyati navani dehi”
Krishna simplifies further by saying that the soul leaves one body and enters another, just as we change our clothes every day!
“nainam chindanti shastrani
nainam dahati pavakah
na chainam kledayanty apo
na sosayati marutah”
Weapons cannot cut into the soul, fire cannot burn its existence, water is not capable to moisten the soul, and the wind cannot blow it away.
And that was my answer. That my soul’s journey will not end with this body. It will go beyond. Into another life, another name, and yes, another Facebook account!
