SAN DIEGO, October 19, 2013 — The marquee sport in the Winter Olympics is without any doubt figure skating. The winners become stars of the Games. The Olympic gold medalist in ladies’ singles has her name written into history. Peggy Fleming. Dorothy Hamill. Katarina Witt. Kristi Yamaguchi. Tara Lipinksi, Sarah Hughes. Four years ago, it was Kim Yuna of South Korea.

Kim hopes to return to defend her 2010 Olympic crown. So does 2010 men’s singles gold medalist Evan Lysacek of the United States, who is coming out of retirement to compete.

Long before any hopefuls get on a plane for Sochi, the top contenders will compete in the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix series. This is a series of six international competitions in which skaters earn points based on their placement at each event. The top six in each discipline win a place in the ISU Grand Prix final, held this year in Fukuoka, Japan. The winners will become the odds-on favorite to win at the Olympics.

Kim Yuna will miss the Grand Prix season due to a foot injury, opening the door for Americans Ashley Wagner and newcomer Gracie Gold, and Mao Asada of Japan. Evan Lysacek is nursing a hip injury and hopes to recover in time to fit in at least one Grand Prix event to make him Olympic eligible. Canada’s Patrick Chan, Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi and Yuzuru Hanyu, and rising star Javier Fernandez will fight for the podium among the men, with American Max Aaron hoping to perform well.

The closest to a sure thing the U.S. has is the dance team of Meryl Davis and Charlie White, world champions and 2010 Olympic silver medal winners. Their biggest competition comes from Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the reigning Olympic champions from Canada.

Among the pairs, Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany are the favorites to achieve the Olympic gold medal they have long been working for. Their greatest competition will come from Chinese and Russian teams; this event may be Russia’s best chance at a figure skating medal. Caydee Denney and John Coughlin are America’s team to watch.
