SANTA MONICA, Ca, August 3, 2011 — One Pico, The signature restaurant in resort Shutters on the Beach has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the third year in a row. To qualify for the award restaurants must have at least 100 wine selections on their list that match with the theme and style of the restaurant. One Pico’s menu contains dishes with Mediterranean influence delivered in a decidedly California way. Dishes include Scampi Risotto. Smoked and Braised Beef Short Rib and Sheep’s Milk Ravioli to name a few.

“We are delighted to be recognized by Wine Spectator with this prestigious award for our dedication to creating a memorable selection,” said Shutters General Manger Gregory Day. “Our Master Sommelier Peter Neptune and I continue to make it our goal to introduce our culinary guests to new and distinct vintages or producers, and open the door to an education of the senses.”

Both Day and Neptune understand that great wine is not predicated by cost and have populated over 60% of the wine list with wines that are $60 or below. They hope this will allow diners to explore more wine pairings with Executive Chef Michael Reardon’s masterful menu.

To make this exploration of food and wine pairings even easier One Pico offers a seasonal three-course pairing menu entitled “Love the Grape” that features a different grape varietal each month. Love the Grape menus are offered Tuesday through Sunday and include a three-course dinner with either three ounces of wine per course for $50 or six ounces of wine per course for $65. The featured grape for August is Riesling.

“We are always trying to encourage our guests to sample wines that were previously unfamiliar to them.  This allows patrons of One Pico to experiment with a newly discovered varietal, vintage or producer and expand their palate in a really fun way,” said Shutters General Manager Gregory Day.  “Peter Neptune and I always wanted to bring a list to life that was exciting, affordable and eclectic—I think this really is the one.  Love the Grape is just a playful extension of the wine program.”

Laurie was not born with a silver corkscrew in her mouth. In fact, growing up Laurie thought wine was pink and came in a box. After several stressful business dinners trying to order off wine lists the size of a phone book, she began educating herself on wine. In 2001 she left the business world to professionally study wine and save others from these awkward moments. Laurie began her wine career in Manhattan where she studied with the American Sommelier Association to earn her certificate in Viticulture and Vinification. She has since earned an Advanced Certificate with the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET), completed her first step towards certification with the Court of Master Sommeliers and has trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. Laurie’s specialty is creating unique corporate keynotes, team building events and group tasting seminars where she can deliver on her mission to demystify wine one glass at a time.
