NEW YORK, September 28, 2012 — Runners, are you ready? It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for — a television quality broadcast about our favorite sport. We wait all year long for major marathons like Boston and New York to give us just a few hours of running coverage. Now the wait is over.

New York Road Runners launched Wednesday the debut of “On The Run,” a weekly lifestyle web show dedicated to exploring the life of the runner. It’s hosted by yours truly.

Every week between now and the ING New York City Marathon on November 4, “On The Run” will give viewers insider access to professional athletes like Meb Keflezighi, Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher, plus news about community running programs around the country and perspectives on the state of the sport from some of the biggest names in the running media. Every webisode will also feature inspirational local heroes, coaching and training tips, or other stories sure to inspire your own running.

Brought to you by New York Road Runners, the not-for-profit organization responsible for the ING New York City Marathon, “On The Run” aims to fill the void in running broadcast coverage on a national level. No more waiting for the New York City marathon in the fall and the Boston Marathon in the spring to get those precious few hours of running TV. New webisodes of “On The Run” will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m., and all segments and past episodes will be available to view on-demand.

For the first episode, “On The Run” spent the day at the Fifth Avenue Mile on Saturday, September 26 where Olympians Bernard Lagat, Matthew Centrowitz and Leo Manzano battled on the streets of New York City alongside 5,000 other runners of all ages and abilities. But the show also takes viewers outside of New York City to Minnesota for a profile of Gabriele Anderson, a U.S. miler who has already beat cancer twice by the age of 26.

Then we visit Pine Ridge, South Dakota for a look at the One Spirit Runners from the Lakota Native American tribe, who are preparing to run the ING New York City Marathon to raise money for a local youth center on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Sid Howard is the show’s first local hero. He has 48 national master’s titles to his name and volunteers for a number of running programs. And Brian Cazeneuve of Sports Illustrated stops by the show to chat about the mystique of the mile as a racing distance.

I hope you’ll tune in. Not just as host of the show, but also as someone who has been longing for more running broadcast coverage, who crouches in front of my computer to watch the London, Chicago and other marathons stream live online, and savors the moments runners get to shine on national TV during the Olympics.

Moving from behind the computer to in front of the camera has been an exciting challenge for me. I’ve still got a lot of learning to do in the world of broadcast, but seeing the stories of so many amazing and, often, unsung runners play out on screen has given me chills.

Check out the show at ontherun.nyrr.org, and we hope to see you on the run.
