I’m not the fastest runner and I’m not the slowest. But I am a card-carrying nerd. That’s right. A reporter and writer by trade, I love to research, read, learn and cogitate, almost compulsively so. Karla Bruning is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in Newsweek, The Philadelphia Inquirer, San Francisco Chronicle, The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, The Gazette in Montreal and two dozen other publications. As a former Newsweek reporter and researcher, Karla contributed to cover stories for the International Edition and frequently sat in as head of research and Periscope editor. She won a Fulbright scholarship to Germany for young American journalists, and received reporting grants from the Carnegie and Knight Foundations to cover religion in America and the Scripps Howard Foundation to cover religion in India. Karla majored in religion at Amherst College and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. While there, the Religion Newswriters Association named her one of 10 national finalists for Student Writer of the Year. When not pounding the pavement as a reporter, Karla is often pounding the pavement as a runner.
