DIEGO January 5, 2013 – Boxing heads, if you resolved not to miss any action in the ring in 2013, Ringside Seat will help you keep that resolution. We anticipate a great year of exciting fights in 2013, starting with this rundown of the highlights of the schedule for January.

Saturday, January 19

Orlando Salido vs. Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia; Gennady Golovkin vs. Gabriel Rosado; Rocky Martinez vs. Juan Carlos Burgos
HBO Boxing After Dark, 9:45 p.m.
Madison Square Garden, New York

Mexican featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KOs) defends his belt against Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (30-0, 26 KOs), younger brother of trainer Robert Garcia of Oxnard, California. Salido won an exciting, action packed fight against Juan Manuel Lopez last March, then knocked out Moises Guitierrez in a July fight in Mexico. Garcia will have his hands full with Salido, who can take it just as well as he dishes it out. Garcia won an eighth round TKO victory against Jonathan Barros in November in Las Vegas.

While there may not be a Pacquiao, Mayweather, or Alvarez in the ring this January, there will be plenty of action for boxing heads including this bill on HBO January 19. Photo: HBO

Fans may be more eager to see the hard hitting man from Kazahkstan via Germany, Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KOs) in only his second U.S. appearance against Rosado (21-5-0, 13 KOs), a no-nonsense, solid junior middleweight contender from Philadelphia who should have plenty of fans in the Garden. Golovkin had a spectacular American debut in September, decking Grzegorz Proksa in impressive fashion for a fifth round TKO. It’s a big jump from an upstate New York casino to Madison Square Garden. Let’s see how Golovkin handles it.

Also on the card, a classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico matchup; junior lightweight titleholder Rocky Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KOs) of Mexico.

Saturday, January 26

Lucas Matthysse vs. Michael Dallas Jr; Selcuk Aydin vs. Jesus Soto Karrass; Jermell Charlo vs. TBA
Showtime, 10 p.m. Eastern
The Joint, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s a tripleheader at the Hard Rock, with Argentinean Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KOs) in the main event against 26-year-old Michael Dallas of Bakersfield, California. Dallas is coming off two wins in 2012, but in 2011 he lost to Josesito Lopez by a seventh round KO, and a decision to Mauricio Herrera. Matthysse is also coming off two victories but of far greater significance against Humberto Soto and Olusegun Ajose, both knockouts. Matthysse has never been knocked out; his only losses were extremely questionable split decisions. The 30-year-old Matthysse punches people like a jackhammer into concrete. Dallas will be lucky to walk out of the ring on his own power at the end of the fight.

Turkish fighter Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KOs) is coming off his first defeat by Robert Guerrero; Soto Karass of Mexico (26-8-3, 17 KOs) is also coming off a loss to Marcos Maidana. These welterweights both want redemption in their crowded division, and they will be motivated to give it everything they’ve got.

Junior middleweight prospect Jermell Charlo (19-0, 9 KOs) of Houston will face an opponent to be determined.
