House and Senate square off again

If Congress shuts down, how can we tell? Photo: Jim Bozeman

MILLINOCKET, Maine, September 30, 2013 ― After Cruz’s filibuster, Reid’s bluster and senior GOP cluster, political theater is losing its luster. It’s actually more like a tired and tiresome soap opera:

Will the monster known as Obamacare come to life this week? Can the House score a one-year delay with Harry Reid and Senate Democrats standing in the way? Will the debt ceiling be raised? Will the government shut down? Will Congress shut down?

Dorothy Parker might ask, “If Congress shuts down, how can we tell?” Maybe it’s time to simply declare the US government is an oligarchy and send Congress home to ponder the good old days of compromise.

If, after all this, Obamacare is fully implemented, we will have lost another example of American exceptionalism. We’ll be just like Europe or Canada. Can we live with that?
