WASHINGTON, March 27, 2013 — Holi is back! You know, that festival you’ve seen on the news with people splashing colors on each other in one big hot, fun mess. Well although Holi has its beginnings in India, it’s made the trip around the world to Washington D.C.

With it comes the color, music, and excitement of the same ancient Holi tradition performed in India. The event, which has grown steadily since its D.C. beginnings four years ago, will take place on March 30th from 11am to 4pm at Iskcon D.C.

Holi is about changing the way we think of ourselves and others

“Holi celebrates the coming of spring,” says festival organizer Ananda. “The event is centered around the throwing of rainbow colored powders. Symbolically, Holi is also about changing the way we look at ourselves and others. It’s about leaving black and white thinking behind and appreciating variety and difference. And it’s plain and simple good fun!”

Along with the colors will be a Food Court offering a variety of freshly prepared vegetarian and vegan foods and fresh juices, a Holi shopping arcade with clothing, books, and gifts, and exotic world music on the stage.

1 pm starts the first of the three Rainbow Throws

1:00 pm starts the first of three “Rainbow Throws” - A collective countdown to a massive color throw into the air. Gaura Vani, one of DC’s own, will lead the stories and music around the Rainbow Throws. The MC of the festival will be Adam ‘Omkara’ of Omkara World.

“We love this festival around here,” said last year attendee Ramdas Shingdia. “Everyone has a blast and leaves covered from head to toe with colors.”

Holi DC is organized by ISKCON of DC, a non-profit inspired to help make the world a better place through the education and culture of Bhakti Yoga. ISKCON of DC offers opportunities for individual and social change through vegetarian food programs, spiritual music and meditation, and access to books on philosophy and self-empowerment. This year they celebrate 40 years of service to the DC Metro area.
