WASHINGTON, August 22, 2012 — Women of Bhakti is a visually stunning documentary that takes you from the sacred villages of India to the modern practice of bhakti in the West. In the process it uncovers the pure essence of this timeless tradition, from ancient times into the present.
Bhakti is inherent to all, and is the heart and core as to who were are as people.
According to the film, the word “bhakti” is translated into English as “love,” and the practice of “Bhakti Yoga” is a non-denominational, gentle process of fine tuning and becoming that which we truly are: Bhakti. So bhakti is inherent to all and is the heart and core of who were are as people.
Yoga and spirituality can seem very male dominated when we think of the various “gurus,” most of whom are male. With the explosion of the Yoga scene in the West (with over 20 million practitioners, 80 percent being female), film producer Jahnava Hausner felt it was time to showcase and bring forth the voices of women and many of the great female Yoga teachers of the world who, in other times, were rarely given the chance to share.
Don’t mistake this documentary for a “chick flick,” though. It’s equally relevant to all, and features commentary from international male practitioners of Yoga and scholars such as Radhanatha Swami, GauraVani, and Edwin Bryant. It also includes a well-rounded cast of speakers, such as Sharon Gannon, Shiva Rea, Wah, Karnamrita Dasi, and Keli Lalita Reddy, to name just a few.
