WASHINGTON, August 20, 2012 — On Saturday, over 100 moms, children, and activists from all over the country converged at the front of the Capital reflecting pool to protest the recent shut downs of lemonade stands and swat-style raids on small farmers.

Led by activist groups Raw Milk Freedom Riders and Lemonade Freedom Day, the group celebrated their “right to voluntary exchange” by selling farm fresh milk and lemonade without permits.

Last year three people were arrested at the Lemonade Freedom Day event, but organizers credited increased numbers and media coverage for no such incidents on Saturday.

Origins of the Event

National Lemonade Freedom day founder, and one of the main organizers of the August event, Robert Fernandes, began the tradition after seeing multiple news reports about children’s lemonade stands being shut down because they did not comply with regulations.

The FDA has engaged in several long undercover sting operations and raids against peaceful farmers and buying clubs over raw milk. FDA has also pressured states to restrict raw dairy access.

These activists believe that people have the right to engage in voluntary exchange and peacefully obtain the food of their choice from the producer of their choice whether that is raw milk from a local farmer or lemonade from the children next door.

The Right to Self-Ownership

Rob Fernandes, founder of Lemonade Freedom Day states: “This event is about more than just lemonade or raw milk. This issue is about the right to self- ownership. You own your body. You have the right to do what you want to do with your body, just as long as you are not harming someone else or someone’s property. Lemonade Freedom Day is about freedom.”
