Washington, April 20th, 2012- 2012 Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington D.C. plans again to be an exciting and entertaining all day event with a focus to ‘mobilize the Earth and demand a sustainable future.’
Sponsored by the Earth Day Network, the event will feature music, entertainment, celebrity speakers, and environmental activities.
The event is free and open to the public.
Dates and Times: April 22, 2012, noon to 7 p.m.
Exhibits will be on display April 20-22, 2012
Location: National Mall between 9th and 14th Streets.
Headlining performers will include: Cheap Trick • Dave Mason • Kicking Daises
VIP Speakers will include: D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray • EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson • Rev. Jesse Jackson • Atlanta Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli • Indy car driver Leilani Munter
EcoVillage: The event will include interactive exhibits, including renewable energy demonstrations, educational workshops and voter registration. Exhibitors include NASA, the United Nations Environment Programme, Vietnam Veterans of America, the Yasuni Initiative / Embassy of Ecuador, Kids vs. Global Warming, Tremont Electric, Solar City, and Interfaith Moral Action on Climate Change.
Earth Day Youth March: The event, slated to be the largest Earth Day youth march ever, begins at 11:30 a.m. at 12th Street and Madison Drive NW and will join the main event at noon.
A Billion Acts of Green: This year’s event will feature a final countdown to A Billion Acts of Green, a global referendum on the environment that demonstrates the breadth of support for strong, coordinated action to address the world’s most pressing environmental issues, such as climate change. A Billion Acts of Green is the world’s largest environmental service campaign and has inspired over 940 million environmental actions from individuals, businesses, governments and civic organizations.
E.P.A. National Sustainable Design Expo: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will sponsor hands-on activities for all ages near 14th Street and the National Mall. The event also features the National Sustainable Design Expo where EPA, green businesses, non-profits and college students from across the country will showcase their efforts to protect the planet.
