WASHINGTON, December 16, 2011- This week a special viewing of “Farmageddon- the Unseen War on America's Farms” was screened in the Capital Building for members of congress and the senate.
Farmageddon vividly conveys the stories of numerous farmers who found themselves on the wrong side of government food policy. New laws and rulings have adversely affected small farms and organic buying clubs, and have gotten the attention our politicians.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D, ME), Ed Perlmutter, (D, CO), and Congressman Ron Paul, (R, TX) sponsored the Congressional screening.
Pingree, who is also an organic farmer and member of MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association,) introduced the movie. Pingree emphasized the importance of her colleagues understanding the devastating effects regulatory policies are having on small American farms.
Filmmaker Kristin Canty
Various representatives, aides, and concerned citizens made their way to Emancipation Hall for the viewing.
Film Producer Kristin Canty , Liz Reitzig, and daughter Emily were in attendance (Reitzig appears in the film and is Secretary of the National Independent Consumers and Farmers Association) and fielded questions and answers after the viewing.
Also in attendance and fielding questions were Linda and Larry Failace- Linda and Larry appear in the film, and Linda is the Author of “Mad Sheep,” the personal story of her own experience being raided by the USDA and having her sheep confiscated because of fears of Mad Cow disease.
