HOUSTON, November 25, 2013 —We are just hours away from Monday Night Football where the San Francisco 49ers will square off against the Washington Redskins at FedEx field, in what is a must-win game for both teams.
Both teams have quarterbacks that have parallel similarities. Both San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Redskins quarterback Robert Griffen III (RG3) are in their sophomore years in the NFL. They both debuted last season and exploded onto the scene, both men representing the future of NFL quarterbacks as both rookies were a dual threat both on the ground with their running game as well as their passing game.
RG3 took a 3-6 record last season and turned it around with a seven game winning streak that would lead the Redskins to a division championship. Meanwhile Kaepernick led the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, like many rookies throughout NFL history, both quarterbacks are in a sophomore slump. Last season RG3 had a 102.4 passer rating and 65.6 completion percentage which has fallen dramatically this season to 83.6 and 59.7. Kaepernick last season had a 98.3 passer rating and 65.4 completion rate, which has dropped to 81.8 and 56.2 this season.
The 49ers have a record this season of 6-2, but have lost two games in a row. Kaepernick must lead his team to a victory in order to edge closer to the playoffs, as they are third in the NFC West.
The Redskins enter tonight’s game 3-7, and many speculate that if they don’t pull off a victory it could be Mike Shanahan’s last season as head coach for the Redskins.
The Redskins are a five point underdog going into this game, and most predict the 49ers to win by much more, however, the Redskins should not be counted out. There is still plenty of football to be played this season and they still have weapons on their team aside from RG3, those weapons being running back Alfred Morris and wide receiver, Pierre Garcon.
Alfred Morris is also in his second year but unlike the aforementioned sophomores, Morris continues to be a consistent threat. Morris has a total of 918 yards this season and leads the league in running backs with 5.2 yards per carry.
Pierre Garcon leads the team with 67 catches and 871 yards. Garcon has a knack for finding the football sometimes under seemingly impossible situations.
If RG3 can control his passing game and continue to show confidence in his running game, which lacked in the beginning of the season, then they just might be able to pull off an upset against the 49ers.
The Monday Night Football game will air live on ESPN at 8:40 PM (EST).
