FAIRFAX: Police arrest suspect in shooting of Mount Vernon teen

WASHINGTON, September 16, 2013 — Fairfax County police have a suspect in custody in the killing of 16 year old Gerard Gomez at a Marriott Residence Inn hotel located in the McLean/Vienna Virginia area, about 1 mile from the Tysons Corner shopping mall.

Alberto Blanco-Calzadilla, 23, turned himself in on Sunday night for the shooting, according to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department. Blanco-Calzadilla has been charged with second degree murder.

Gomez was a junior at Mount Vernon High School according to his Facebook page. Officials at the school sent an email letter to parents and guardians of students at the high school yesterday, stating that counselors will be available at the school today for any student who feels like they need them. The school also released a statement describing Gomez as a very well liked student.

Witnesses told local news station WJLA that there had been a large party in one of the rooms at the hotel which later spilled into the parking lot.

A witness told WUSA9 that he had hear one shot and someone yelling about someone being dead.

Police told the local news station that officers had tried to resuscitate Gomez on the scene but were unsuccessful.
